Here is an interesting article about the new motors that Drainvac is using in their central vacuum units. I have a few of their current models and the motors are very good, I would say just as good if not better than Ametek. Apparently all of Domel's new motors are 5.7 inch so I have no idea how they get this much power. Some are more powerful than Ametek's 7.2 or 8.4 inch motor, that defies the law of physics, an 8.4 inch motor will move more air than a 5.7 inch motor. Anyway, the article is interesting.

I was questioning putting cold air intake filter on a vacuum. This is basically compressing air forcing as much as possible. It's very similar in science behind cold air intakes or even super chargers for cars. I don't know if I would call this top secret. I've seen alot of people on you tube doing all sorts of things.
I don't claim to be a genius in any field of science. I'm just making parallel reasoning behind car modification uses similar method to gain power. The fuel combustion is different but compressing air into motor is similar.

A radial discharge vacuum motor is not new or unusual.Maybe it has a new tapered fan design-more than one stage?These radial discharge motors are actually very similar to radial gas turbine engines-small ones-typically used in helicopters and other vehicles that have smaller HP or thrust requirements.Superchargers originated for recip or hybrid aircraft engines operating at high altitudes needing extra oxygen to burn the fuel.For a typical passenger car-not necessary.On racer cars,large engines running at the high side of their range-OK-Ie constant high HP.Our cat genest has two turbochargers!one for each side of the 16 cyl Cat 3816 engine-3000Hp @1800RPM.8 cylinders on each side of the V configuration.Look up Wright turbo coumpound engines used on aircraft-engines used just before turboprop engines came about.Those could generate 2500-3000 plus HP to turn propellors on older airliners.

I think the secret part was that Domel was pretty quiet about them until they were released. I just got a couple of Drainvac units, the Viper and the Powerhouse. Based on the sound, I'm going to guess that these motors spin faster than Ametek's 6.6, 7.2, and 8.4 motors, I wonder if that's what Domel is doing? A 5.7 motor that spins faster? It sounds like their design is related to how the fans are designed, I think some of these motors may actually have 5 or 6 fans on them but not sure. Anyway, whatever they are doing, it works, the Powerhouse has 790 air watts and the Viper has 860 air watts, making it the most powerful unit in my collection. But the motors are still pretty quiet, you could still have a normal conversation in the same room with these units. I think Drainvac is the only company to use Domel motors, everyone else uses Ametek.

BTW, Domel motors are also being used by Lux International. Lux D820, Lux Intelligence and S115 have them.

Doesn't Sebo and Miele use Domel motors as well? If you look on their web site, their motor range is quite impressive. One interesting thing about that article, it basically says that the 7.2 and 8.4 inch motors are more just marketing hype and that these motors spin slower. However, if a motor spins slower I would think it would last longer. Apparently the Domel motors that are in the Drainvac units are designed to last 20 years or more. I think that's one reason you don't see those high pitch screaming motors that are so common in portable vacuums today lasting as long, they are spinning much faster so they wear out faster.

@tolivac This is a line that has been perpetuated by dealers for a long time . It's stems up to Miele corporate. There are absolutely made by Domel
Which is a good thing because in my humble opinion they make the best vacuum motors.

Domel 463 is not a Miele motor...

Domel does not manufacture Miele vacuum motors. Here's are photos of Domel's 463 thermoplastic bottom commutator motor.

Miele motors are made in their own factory in Euskirchen, Germany.

Sebo motors are sourced from Domel, Ametek, and B/S/H.

@piano_god Some are made there Under license from Domel. Some of the Miele motor come straight from Domel. There AC Powerhead motors come from Ametek Italy.

It makes sense to use off-the-shelf parts when available.

Besides uprights, canisters, and central vacuums. Domel also makes some motors for some higher end wet dry vacuum companies such as Nilfisk or Festool for example.

I think Domel also makes the motors for some backpack cleaners, I guess those would be similar to canister cleaner motors.

Hey

I have that royal vacuum. It's 8.5 amp pulls 115-120 cfm. It has a Hoover sister vacuum. The vacuum is great but the 1.25 inch hose is meh.
Very interesting.
