I was looking at some vacs on Ebay.

Are these people smoking their socks ? Some of the vacuums are nice rare and either in perfect condition or fully restored in which case their high asking prices can be justified, But some are fairly run of the mill. Is this normal on Ebay ?
What amazes me is that teh same vacuums you guys are buying and seeing for $5.00 in the thrif shops are selling for $ 250.00 on Ebay. It seems to me someone is making a killing off selling vintage vacuums on Ebay.

Smoking their socks!

Thanks Gareth for giving me a good hearty laugh at near end of a very stressful day! Truly some auctions start out at a ridiculous price, and they think someone will bid them up? Not likely. That's why the frequent post on here from a new poster, "how much is this vacuum worth", always gives me a chuckle. They're on their way to Ebay to make a killing! What slays me is, sometimes you see the same listing more than once, and they've never lowered the opening bid! Oh well, looks like they'll be hanging on to the little gem for a while.

Charles,
Look at those rare attachments, I have never seen those before on an Electrolux! haha.

Forget eBay, on my local craigslist there is an Dirt Devil RV central vacuum being sold for $412.

Thanks Rick

I personally love finding them in bad condition like the above Electrolux and restoring them to new, Funny thing for $70.00 that would be a bargain to me if it was in SA because it would be a once off find but their are loads in the USA.

I can understand paying allot if its been fully restored in mint condition, I understand that not all of us who Love vintage vacuums have the ability and the know how to restore a vintage machine.

I get many calls from those who wish to get rich quick with their ultra rare vintage Electrolux ........From 1996 with all the wrong parts. The Interesting thing is that those who call and tell me that they have a vacuum they would like to give me ( not sell me ) always have the rarest and oldest vacuums

Sometimes I think people list their vacuums just to show them off. $1000 for a very old Kirby is just ridiculous. Or they want a fortune for cootie-infested crap that's rusting out and has no attachments.

hence

the blue latex gloves.
Don't get a cut taking apart the inner motor housings. You never know what lurks in there either. MRSA, Staphococyl, etc.
One for sale at a resale store actually smelled like vomit. It was a black Hoover Futura canister in nice exterior shape with the wind tunnel power head.
Nope, not even for the $20 they had on it.
Yo-ho smell ya lata.

Replacement bag,wheels,handle-no way-that seller needs to soak his head!!!That machine should be priced for the cost of the repairs to a USER--NOT a collector.and the Rebuilt label on the nameplate-if NOT rebuilt as such than maybe.Wonder if the fan was replaced,too-plastic one.

add vintage and the price goes up :)

Some of the sellers are pretty crazy.

There is one that sprays the whole machine, and then lists it as a "metal canister Electrolux" at insane prices.

Interesting that the machines are not disassembled, and painted properly.

Nope, spray the handle, the body, etc as one. They look awful.

Others have some rusted out POS that they think is worth a lot.

No Goodwill finds in my area, but the best bargains were from elderly people.

It helps to be polite and nice as well in dealing with people. (even if they are schmucks)

That goofy seller wants you to pay $366 for a Hoover Elite-Legacy vacuum that has a worn cord(least they were honest enough to show you),Dirty bag,Worn floor shoe and roller brush.Think you could find a BETTER one at a vac shop trade in pile-or the trade in pile from the Kirby guys sales truck.Beleive that vacuum has been MORE than when it was new!!!!Have vacuums increased in value over the years-If so then we all have some INVESTMENTS here!Another thought on that EBay machine-are there attachments included with it?What condition are they in?

The only thing I can figure is that two people got into a bidding war with it and didn't know when to stop??? 10 bids between 2 bidders...they started it out at $35.00

One of the best ones that I remember viewing was this "clean" vintage hoover canister (can't remember the model).

They took pictures of it dripping wet on the driveway next to the garden hose.
