One of SWMBO's good friends recently got a new Vacuum. I Bougth her old DC33 off her for scrap value and refurbed it (nothing bloody wrong with it), but we went round there today and I asked if I may have a closer look at her new toy, the most modern Dyson I've seen so far, a DC75 Cinetic Big Ball. She said have a go, so of course I did!

First impressions are it's not too noisy, certainly not a high pitched screamer like some Dysons. The build quality is pleasing too, the DC33 and DC50 are very flimsy I feel, especially around where the wand meets the chassis. It is filthy though, especially behind the cyclone. My DC50 is the same, not sure I like the way the dirt channel connects up to the cyclone on the new ones. The brushroll was ok, but again nothing special. It does work better on the max setting, but was ok on the normal one. Suction was on par with most other Dysons, and I did try to put the wand back in the wrong way round when I wasnt looking at what I was doing!

The whole thing feels a bit meh tbh. It's good, I cant deny that, but judging by the state of it after 2 months I dont hold out much hope for the filterless design, she said they registered the guarantee last month...

I filmed a short clip of me using it in their bedroom. The carpet is ruined, their having a big extension next year so holding out on replacement until then, and have 2 dogs and a child, and live on a farm so fair play, it's gonna get dirty.

Would I feel good about sinking £350 new on one? Jesus no! (my car cost me £350...), but when they start falling into the sub £30 bracket on ebay, I'll happily get one for a teardown!

Sptyks

Unless you have one it's not fair to say your hoover is better even though you don't have the dyson.

And is not a thing it's a Dyson.

Dysonboy: I don't have to own a Dyson to judge it's performance. Anyone can see by watching the video that the Dyson is taking 3 or 4 passes and there is still visible dirt and hair left behind.  If any of the vacuums in my collection performed like that Dyson, I would get rid of it asap.

my thoughts on Dyson

Ok, first off, I will say up front, I do not own a Dyson, never have, and do not want to since I'm not a fan of bagless vacuums. My thoughts are based on many reviews that I have read and seen. It does seem that Dyson's require more passes than something like a Miele or a Sebo to clean, especially when it comes to carpets. Is the power nozzle on the dc 75 motorized or air driven? An air driven power head will never clean as good as a motorized one, so if it's air driven, that puts it at a big disadvantage. I have also read a lot of reviews that mention problems with the basic design, such as the handle not staying in place on the uprights. I'm actually going to get my girl friend either a riccar prima or a sebo D4 for Christmas. She has had a dirt devil bagless for about 10 years, and it sounds like it's ready to retire.

The "Big Ball" (what the dc75 is here in the US) is not as good as the previous model, the DC65/Ball Allergy vacuum (Dc41 MKII/ DC55 in the UK)

Out of curiosity

Has anyone done a head to head comparison of the 65 and the 75? I ended up buying a used 65 a few months back figuring that with it having a higher airwatt reading and a similar design it'd be the best choice for a Dyson.

I think the DC65 is the better choice, almost 100 more Air Watts, and it's several hundred dollars cheaper. I tried the DC75 "big ball" out at Sears two weeks ago, it felt clunky and it felt like it was just skimming along the carpet. I would rather keep my DC65 than "upgrade" to the big ball.
