Got it. From an elderly gentleman who inherited it from his mum. He seemed shocked when I said I collected them! He then said how happy he was now was that the cleaner was hoping to a good home.

Needs a bit of work first though

You were right the second time this one is dated June 1988 as it say "806" the 8 means the the last number of the year, so 198'8' (of course you need to know the decade which is of course the 80's!" and the 06 means the month, so the sixth month of the year, so June.

I hope this helps you with using this hoover dating system in the future. Nice find anyway, I would love to get my hands on a turbopower junior, I love soft bags!!
 
Very handy Alex, thank you. Did Hoover keep the old style font on the junior for longer then? My TP Total System is about the same age and uses the later style of font. I always assumed the style of font on my U 1220 was earlier than that.

Every day's a school day! Still not fired it up, cant wait for that!
 
Well as far as I am aware the Total Systems always had Turbopower written with a capital "T" and all other 90's turbopowers were too, as much to my knowlege. The very first turbopower Total Sytems had that newer style lettering like on your Total System, about 88-91but they changed the turbopower lettering again to all capitals, probably when the release of the final later series turbopowers in about late 1991.
I have an early Total Sytem, U2602 from 1991 with the same lettering as your Total Sytem and then I also have a freedom from later on in the same year with the later lettering in all capitals, as can be seen in the photo, all the later turbos used this all capital type lettering.

Urgh the boost


I never did see the point in that because I guss the boost would of been most beneficial on the hose which would be almost impossible as when in the far up boost mode it is like a kettle design switch.
I have used a boost, the hose suction in boost mode is really strong!
 
Turbopower hose suction


It is by no means strong ( should of worded it better) but it is adequte for most tasks you want to use it for, it gets the crumbs off the sofa and gets the dinge from the edges, I have cleaned the stairs with my total system before and it did just fine, not as fast as the turbopower 2 but it is ok.
I would put it on the lines with the Dyson DC01, thats for sure...
 
Well yes it can clean the toast crumbs off the mattress, but if you have pet hair on the armchair then good luck at cleaning that up!! Still, like you say, around the DC01 level of suction
 
If yours has a 2 speed switch...

Then, when you use the second speed, I don't think it will boost it to the full 575 watt, at least in your video you made of it, it just sounded like a standard two speed. When the boost is in it's boost setting it is quite high in pitch, which yours didn't seam to be.
 
Boost

The boost feature is actually a Placebo enabling Hoover to have made extra models for the line up.

First and second generation TP's had 400w/410w/450w motors and ran on a 2 way switch with resistors to provide the 2 speeds. Around 400w on 2 and around 250w on 1.


Third generation and total systems that have the 575/650w motors ran around 550w/650w on normal and maybe around 350w on the lower setting.

Boost models used the lower setting 250-350w depending on the motor fitted as the normal button on mode requireing the user to flick back up the switch and hold with their finger in boost as desired. The switch is spring loaded and cannot stay on all the time.

There is no higher power level as such giving the 3 levels one expected a boost to have.
I was sorely dissapointed when we got our first one as I expected the 250w, 450w, normal levels and a boost to 575w.

That was what I was talking about before, the boost setting really would of only been a real benefit on the hose, but as it has to be held down, it is somewhat inpractical, unless the user used some tape to hold it in place while they used the cleaning tools...
 
One has to remember that even back then the Turbopower 1 without tools was fast approaching being a BOL cleaner if it wasnt already seeing as other manufacturers had more advanced cleaners appealing to the average housewife.

The turbo was quite a good little money spinner for hoover and having many variations on what was a basic cleaner might of been enough to persuade Mrs Jones from buying the Lux twin turbo or a goblin lazer if she couldnt afford a total system or it was too heavy.

Thinking about it, the Boost actually seems to be an added value product even if Mrs Jones didnt realise she was getting a TP1 that was dumbed down in a way - she may have not realised but it was no better than a basic junior TP or hardbag basic.
I think the boost was actually about £10 more and cost no more to produce than a normal one.
Hoover must have realised this and cashed in on it.

She thought she was getting a powerful cleaner that boosted for tough cleaning yet was light, easy to use and modernish.
Compared to a Lux turbo2 that had one speed, and was really quite basic.
