I probably will be banned for telling the truth , like some others were a few years back, but I have held my peace long enough..One thing I cant stand is a liar, and it is my opinion we have one in the Presidents office of this club at this time, As most of you know I am in total opposition to the descision to do away with our newsletter, Morgan told me that a survey a few years ago said that ,overwhelmingly the response was to do away with the newsletter and go with an electronic one...This, I found out , was a lie,I recently recieved information that the survey taken, and I did reply to it, was 80 out of 119 members voted to keep the newsletter, now its a funny thing to me that that is overwhelmingly just the opposite!At the time the Survey was taken Morgan admitted he was mistaken,I must say, a small clique is running the club , Our President it seems does just as he is told and goes along, Most of the new comers in our club know nothing about the past, but Alex Taber and John Lucia started this club,For many years Alex and John ran things, Charles lester did beautiful newsletters, then a little later Tom Gasko took over,The powers that be did not like Tom or Clay Floyd , my opinion of this is 1 they both say exactly what they think, 2 they are not politically correct and 3 they were very threatened by them because Tom and Clay know more about the history of the vacuum cleaner than any of the little group now running things will ever know, The old club I joined in 1994 was not a social club for the ultra rich and the want to be's, but was a club for people who collected vacuums, our conventions were not designed around cocktail parties and drinking,and fancy 5 star hotels and such, but rather a very inclusive group who had a good time, I left a few years ago because of Tom and Clay being thrown out, I came back because I was half way convinced that it wasnt all the clubs fault, I want to go on the record and say I was 100% wrong,Tom and Clay do have their own ways of doing things, but im more covinced than ever that they were done dirty, I think our club should make some radical leadership changes, Morgan told me in a recent email that he didnt want all that paper in his house and we have to move forward...excuse me, but this is a COLLECTORS club,If you dont want to collect GET OUT!!!Im sorry if this insults anyone, but I can remain silent no longer, My Partner Donald has been a member of a Christmas Light Collectors Group for several years, the exact things that are happening here, have happened there, They have gone from a small group of Vintage Christmas Light Collectors, to a bunch of ultra rich collectors of anything but lights, our present ruling factor would love it, the last convention was going to cost each person 2000.00! rediculous....if you want to join a country club, fine, dont make this club into one.Hans.

I find it hard to believe that someone who has not done anything for the club like serving on the board or setting up a convention has the gall to post such a statement on the forum. I by no means am rich...I am retired military and believe me I am not rich by any means. To make such statements without knowing all the facts is not right it is very rude as a matter of fact. There are always two sides to an event and apparently you only got one side. My understanding of the event that kicked people out of the club was due to bullying a child in the club. That is all I know and that is enough for me to say good, glad they did it.

Good to hear from you. I did not want to duplicate a post but I have voiced my opinion on another thread that coincides with what is being said here. You make some really valid points and only those who have been in the club in the earlier years can understand how you feel.

Change always happens in organizations .....no matter who is in charge. It will happen by virtue of growth alone. I ask those of you who are not happy with the club to become part of the solution...give your ideas, join the board, host a convention....etc. Barb

I live a very simple life in a very simple home with lots of wonderful friends. Our convention costs are very minimal and everyone that attends has a wonderful time.

Respectfully speaking, those of us who have decided not to renew our memberships for varied reasons, would then have to pay the annual dues to be a participant in hosting a convention, becoming a board member, etc. as you suggest. To quote the VCCC web page on this site, membership dues provides free quarterly newsletters, access to the Vacuumland web site, and the ability to register for conventions. Inasmuch as the newsletter has been retired and this website is being run by donations to Robert Seger, the only thing left that the club has to offer for the $35 fee is the ability to register for the conventions. So in theory, paying the dues affords one the opportunity to spend even more money. Since you seem to be on the inside and are privy to the club's activities, could you shed some light on just what the annual dues provides a member other than what I stated? Seems to me I would be paying something for nothing if I am not able to attend a convention annually.

I despise personal attacks on a open format. One can most certainly have an opinion that is fine, but it can be done so without attacking someone personally. This entire newsletter thing should be easy to resolve.

Alex has said on many occasions he is able and willing to act as editor and get something out and no one has responded to his generous request.
Inasmuch, with many, many intelligent people here some solution should be able to be ratified by the membership.
For the record - The entire membership did receive a poll I am thinking two maybe three years ago on what they would prefer; electronic or printed newsletter. The poll was conducted by then Vice President Rick W. I remember very clearly receiving it and completing it.
I for one like the idea of the electronic newsletter...yes save a tree and it was decided to put the letter in a pdf format. Very easy to print if you so choose. You can even send it to FedEx office via attachment and they will print it and you can pick it up. (2.10 per page for color copy) Seems to me that was a great solution.
With that said - let peace and harmony prevail. If you read through the postings as far as activities and such that are offered to the members - it is always the same people working to pull it together ie: Barb!
If you don't have resource to attend the convention okay...but you can still be part of the solution via internet.

One More Thing!!
Some of you will remember when we lost our home to a fire in Washington DC. The outpouring of love, concern and phone calls left me speechless.
Morgan - called several times to check on us and offered his banking expertise too when we had issues with our claim and the bank. The thoughtfulness and love will never be forgotten. From what I am hearing and reading from everyone these days is what I have based my following opinion on. It is just my opinion and offering as part of the solution. Nothing more. </span>

I am simply stating my preference. And for me that can change from time to time and come back around again. We all have a soft spot in our hearts and are passionate for the machine (s) that we remember from our childhood days when our parents would not have gone out and bought us the vacuum of our choice for a gift--as least not mine! I am an adult now and I can buy whatever machine I choose now. My point here is the same as some of the others-things change over time. If they don't change they die off or lose their freshness. Things hopefully evolve for the betterment of society. You can sit around and complain about something but unless you get involved, you cannot be a part of the change or solution. And, if you don't get involved you have no right to complain. Are you with me so far? Good!</span>

This would be a safe and protected environment for club members only, not for the general public. Isn't that what a club is? It's an exclusive group of people who share the same interests. Thank you Louis, that was a great post!!! I'm am more than thrilled to hear that you guys are working on a website home for the VCCC as a separate club, it is a marvelous idea. I think it is an important thing to do.
With this news of a VCCC website coming soon, I'm going to update the clubs page since it is so out of date and has erroneous information on it. Now it will be a temporary placeholder for a few months until you all can get your site up and running.
As for Vacuumland, it will continue to exist and go on as it has been. Both the VCCC site and Vacuumland can exist together in harmony, and both sites will fulfill very different needs of it's members. Vacuumland will continue to be an open forum be for people who want to correspond about vacuums, appliances and most other topics that are important to the member's lives. Vacuumland will continue to be open and paid for by voluntary contributions and advertising. I've been running automatcwasher.org since 2001 and after 13 years, I have no intention to close either site.

Very well said. I have met you personally and think very highly of you. I am in total agreement with what you said about getting along, etc. so I will not reiterate your comments. I think some of the tenured folks who remember the Club back in the days of it being drama free and enjoyable are unhappy with the effect progress has afforded. While I am on board with moving with the times and even though I have an affinity with vintage appliances, I am not stuck in a time warp. Progress should have a positive affect and in some ways, our Club has taken on some negative overtones from the days of its' inception. I think that is what is frustrating some. There are many fine people who are or have been members and I feel fortunate to have met or become associated with them, because if it were not for this Club, I would not have. My only question, which I feel is appropriate to ask in forum, is what is one afforded for the annual dues. The benefits are posted on this site publically and some of them are obsolete causing one to be misled. If the only perk is to be eligible to register for the annual convention, then I can only wonder if it is cost effective from my viewpoint because I do not think it is prudent to charge someone to be eligible to pay for an event. I don't really think it is unreasonable to question what one receives for dues or what the money is spent for.

Just think......If you have 200 members X $35.....that is $7000! I don't believe it would cost quite that much per year to run a website. People are willing to spend booCoo bucks on a vacuum cleaner but will not spend a few and I mean a few extra dollars to have something really nice. Remember, technology is going to evolve whether or not you want it to or not. Technology is not a bad thing----it's what you do with it that makes it good or bad! We can make it work. Other clubs do.</span>

That kind of stuff would kill me! I am not judging anyone here as I am far from perfect. Things like that may not attract me to a convention necessarily. But if you want nicer things then there is a price associated with those nicer things. It's always nice to do things with a bit of class. Everyone likes classy things? Do we all NOT like classy vacuum cleaners? Isn't that what catches our eye? We all know when something is nice and when it is not. I don't know a single soul who doesn't like or recognize nice things. Do you? </span></span>

All of the convention committees in the past have done an exceptional job bringing the "bestess" ( I am being funny here...I know how to spell it!) of everything to the conventions for the "leastess". There isn't any convention as far as I am concerned that wasn't fantastic! I have loved and enjoyed them all....AGAIN GUYS....as different as they were! Thank God they are not all the same! If we are to be a club then we need to think, act and behave like a club with rules and boundaries like any other. Your job should have to be to police everyone. That takes away from the better things you would like to do! AND, yes, Vacuumland and the Vacuum Cleaners Collectors Club should exist in harmony! There isn't any reason it can't or shouldn't! Everyone can benefit from the best of both worlds! It's gives us options! I like options! Doesn't everyone? </span>

Just think......If you have 200 members X $35.....that is $7000! I don't believe it would cost quite that much per year to run a website. If it does, we could scale back a few things unless everyone was in agreement with increasing the membership dues. People are willing to spend booCoo bucks on a vacuum cleaner but will not spend a few and I mean a few extra dollars to have something really nice. Remember, technology is going to evolve whether or not you want it to or not. Technology is not a bad thing----it's what you do with it that makes it good or bad! We can make it work. Other clubs do.</span>

That is not my style. <span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"> I also heard the comments that lunch would consist of Cheetos and peanut butter sandwiches.That's fine if that's what you want. That kind of stuff would kill me! I am not judging anyone here as I am far from perfect. Things like that may not attract me to a convention necessarily. But if you want nicer things then there is a price associated with those nicer things. It's always nice to do things with a bit of class. Everyone likes classy things? Do we all NOT like classy vacuum cleaners? Isn't that what catches our eye? We all know when something is nice and when it is not. I don't know a single soul who doesn't like or recognize nice things. Do you? </span></span>

A word from the V.C.C.C. fuunder.
In two private emails I told both Barb and Morgan that I was NOT going to get involved with this and I'm not. But I will say this. Neither the Vacuum Cleaner Collector's Club, or Vacuum Land are the club John Lucia and I formed in 1983. That died at the meeting in May of 95, when I walked away!
This mess, and by the way, I'm very upset by it all, is a result of my abandoning ship. What John and I started, has spiraled out of control. Feelings are getting hurt, friends fighting, and so on. The problem as I see it is that we got too big too fast. The club started out as a teaching group to provide information to people interested in vacuum cleaners, and the background information on them. It was to be a fun group.
Then in 1984, Mike Pupek suggested to me that we have a gathering of the few people in the club. The first 'meeting' was in my mom's home in Indiana. A small, quiet group, having a lot of fun and talking shop. Now we have conventions, and they are fantastic. The club has grown to immense proportions, but with it the problems are staggering. And I refuse to take sides in that area.
As for the newsletter, I'd love to do it, love to get involved again, but I can accept a newsletter done electronically, as long as there is SOMETHING for us to read. Also, I'd like to see the webpage open and updated again, and I'd be more than willing to do the work.
As for the rest of this mess, don't ask me to take sides. I won't.

If you want to know what the original VCCC meetings were like, here's the TRUTH. It cost $25 for the 'convention fee' per person. That included the cost of the meeting room, lunch for everyone (NO peanut butter sandwiches or Cheetos) - many different kinds of bread, meats, cheeses, snacks, condiments, and refreshments. There was NO alcohol allowed. No one under 18 could attend without a parent present. The meetings were a wonderful time, filled with sharing of knowledge and machines. We had the cleaning contests which took most of the day, and we also served pizza and refreshments one evening. All this for $25. We selected inexpensive hotels, since the meeting room was where everyone would normally be, not in their individual rooms. The friendships I personally made back then are still ongoing today.
The VCCC, for me, for a long time was a labor of love. I personally wrote and produced and mailed the newsletter for over 100 members. I was a pro-active President of the Club as was R.J.Vanik. Most people don't know there is an entire set of bylaws the club adopted, but they were discarded by the board several years ago. Many in the club have been kept in the dark either through omissions or outright lies, as to what really happened to split up the club.
For me, that's ancient history. The Vacuum Cleaner Museum has become a reality and is the first one in the world. Every day when I go to work, it's like hosting a convention again (I hosted six of them in the time I spent with the VCCC). If anyone wants to come play with virtually every model vacuum ever made, come to the Museum. The hotel rooms in St. James are $55 per night, the museum is FREE to the public. Many former and current VCCC members have visited and all have had a great time.

The V.C.C.C. C. meetings you talk about were the ones I ran, and they were a lot of fun. I had a great time planning them, but the fact is, aside from the $25.00 fee, I covered ALL additional expenses other than meals in restaurants, and motel rooms. But also remember there were no more than 20 members.
All changes happened after I retired and passed it on to you. After that I was gone.
