I Need Info on dd droom vac

ok, I got this dd broom vac today for $10,it works great , and isw very handy. I;m guessing it was made in the 90s? (justify if wrong) How long were they made?, What was the retail price?, Was 10 too much to pay?....Any other info appreciated.... Thanks in advance!

No, I don't think $10. was much to pay at all. It was a nice cleaner, that IMHO, Dirt Devil pulled the plug on too soon. I just checked my 1992 Consumer's catalog, and at the time, it was on sale for $59.99. The list price was $69.99. They were available until the mid-'90's. Dirt Devil then came out with a new "Broom Vac," the rechargeable abomination that resembles an actual broom. I recall purchasing my Broom Vac (the corded one) at Woolworth's in 1995 for $49.99. Sadly, Woolworth's and the Broom Vac are long gone. Hope this helps....

Don't know as much other people here but they were made in early 90's. I don't know for how long or when their production started and stopped. Yours is an early version as well because it has the push button switch instead of the rocker switch, markers for the handle positions (the newer ones didn't have those) and the foil "Broom Vac" label on top of the hood (newer ones didn't have that either). I have a newer one, but either way they are very cute and fun and a great piece of vacuum history. I think it works pretty well too.

I paid 13 dollars for mine.... I don't think 10 is too much, but your sole plate is all rusty (may come off with steel wool) and that leads me to believe the machine may not have been taken care of very well. What kind of shape are the brush roll and soft outer bag in? The bag usually has a hole in the bottom because people try to push the machine with it tipped up on the back wheels and it drags on the ground. How does it run? Have fun with it!

bag is in excellent condition. the brushroll is very clean and not too worn down, it runs extremely smooth, and performs really great for this type of machine. oh...and just looked at the thread title again...srry i said "droom vac"

Great little machine !!

I bought one brand new back in 1992/3 at a Meijer General
Dept. and grocery for $59.00. It always did a great job with
the convience of a regurlar upright. I lived in a studio
apt, with one 5x7 rug. Used it for 2 years.
Still have it with my Dirt Devils on display !!

i have one, with paper bags. book says you could use it with or without them. its like a mini royal upright (my fave vac)and it has a plastic tool kit. its a neat little vac.

early ones have a single brush, later ones a double brush on the roller.

there was a commercial version too, there was one on ebay not too long ago, a gray color.

Gray Dirt Devil broom vac?! Link please!!! I've seen green and blue but never gray! I know of one gray hand vac model too, but have never actually seen one.

I think the earliest of these came from the late 1980s. Its cool that the machine end hose connector is compatible with the hand vac tool kits.

the gray dd was a commerical version in an ebay store. just did a search did not come up. it and a red one where standing on a table outside (love the way people take pics for ebay) seller said it was gray, looked gray in the pic. did not have the $ at the time, he wanted 50 dollars !!! or a best offer.

Another Broom Vac

Another Dirt Devil Broom Vac.

I bought mine about two years ago for seven dollars at my local Goodwill. It ran fine at first until I brought it home and let my sister use it. The motor started to develop a squealing noise and it started slowing down.

I took it apart and found long hair wrapped around the belt shaft and behind the fan. The hair completely covered the front bearing. I removed the hair the best I could and lubricated the front and rear bearing with 3 in 1 oil.

In the process I bent the small motor cooling fan and I had to straighten it out with a pair of needle noise pliers.

Thankfully the unit worked when I reassembled it.

I could never get the fan off of the shaft without bending the cooling fan. Is there a better way to remove the fan?

Is there something better than 3 in 1 oil to lubricate bearings with?

It wasn’t in the best condition when I brought it but it wasn’t the worst I have seen. The brushes still have good length.. But the cord wrap on the bottom part of the handle had been broken off.

I really like it.. It’s loud and maybe some more service will help the noise level decrease. My grandmother had bought one for me when I was six from a close out sale at a hardware store in Cushing Oklahoma.

My first one did not last long. My dad said one of the copper wires in the field core of the motor was not making a connection. He probably just did not want to fix it.

Anyway I think the Broom Vac works well. I just wish it wasn’t so loud.

The belt pulley should be threaded on, so you just remove that. I grip the plastic fan to get it started, and it should come off easy after that. Then the fan just pops off. Pretty simple.

Got it Thanks.. Put it all back together and it runs a little better. I don't think that these had the best motors in them anyway..

The motor is just a GS electric motor, generally found in power nozzles. They were also used in most Dirt Devil hand vacs. I'm not sure if this happened to you or not, but when you open the motor the carbon brushes have a tendency to launch themselves across the room. This is a real problem if you working in an area with dark flooring. I've spent plenty of time hunting for flying carbon brushes from these motors.

Thanks for the info.. So when the motor quits working I can just replace it with a motor from a hand vac. I know that there are plenty of those still around.

And yes I had a hard time keeping the carbon brush on the right side of the motor in place. I double checked to make sure everything was in it's place before I replaced the top half of the motor.
