I need a new vacuum cleaner

Well, the Heritage II has finally taken a complete dump, and I'm not going to sink any more money into it.

I am thinking of getting one of the Royal vacuums I saw at the vac store the other day. Very simple, similar to the Kirby, and supposedly durable.

I'm not keen on spending $400, but I do have allergies and always thought the Kirby did a great job of keeping the floors, especially carpet, clean enough that they didn't bother me too much.

Anyone have any thoughts on what contemporary vac to buy? I could always buy a used Kirby on Ebay but I think I'm going to start a new family tradition here.

The Royal is actually lighter than your Heritage II.  If you get a Royal, be sure it uses a brush roll with brush stiffeners.  They are Royal's "Cushion of Air" technology and help propel the vacuum.  They are therefore more nimble and maneuverable than a Heritage II.  You might consider getting a used one.  The new ones are now made in China.  I've not owned one of the Chinese models, but I've heard others say they have quality control problems.

Ugh, made in China. Perhaps I would be better off with a Kenmore at that rate.

Any suggestions of your personal favorites? Or should I roll the dice with an Ebay Heritage II?

Would you consider other Kirby models. such as the G series which you can get at Good vac for $275.

Have a diffrent fan materials, filtration and motor. Also you get techdrive which is very nice feature.

The main feature in the G Series is the Tech-Drive, which is Kirby's self-propelled system.  It allows the user to use the vacuum with a very light touch.  Another great feature on the G Series is the wider variety of brush rolls from which to choose.  On the Legend II, the only real choice is the standard brush roll.  But on the G Series, you can also choose a brush roll with stiffer bristles, which sets up more positive agitation of the carpet.  I think that brush roll was introduced on the Diamond G.  In addition, Kirby has a specially designed brush roll for pet owners.  The spacing of the bristles is wider apart and therefore doesn't allow pet hair to get as easily entangled in the brush roll.  I have one on my Diamond G and I really like it.  Of course, the HEPA filtration bags are available for the G Series too.  Kirby also redesigned the bag docking system sometime during the Sentria production run.  The new system has tabs which latch onto a couple of lugs on the the bag adapter, thus creating a positive locking system (as opposed to the old friction fit bags).  I upgraded my Sentria to the new style and really like it too.  The bags are much easier and quicker to get on and off.  Plus, I think they are more secure too.  With the old friction fit style, I sometimes didn't get the bag onto the adapter very well and the bag would blow off.

Even if your Royal does have problems, they are easy to repair. I found mine on ebay for $40. You could also look at the Sanitaire or Riccar Supralite/Simplicity Freedom. I hear great things about their deep cleaning abilities. If you are willing to try a canister, the Royal Powertank vacuums are considered to be one of the best models around.

I need a new vacuum cleaner

I have one of new Royal metal uprights. It looks fine BUT it is VERY,VERY LOUD. Make sure you are amware of how loud the machine is in actual use. Mine is also made in China. I cannot stand to use the machine becausde4 of the noise level and it is way too aggressive for some carpets.
You might want to check on Kenmores before buying one as we have had several threads about durability problems and high repair costs.
I do not own any Kenmores but they do look of somewhat low quality in the store and checking on the web I read many reports of problems after about 3 years.
I think I would stay with a Kirby for trouble free service.

I would personally have the Kirby repaired, your best option, since you are planning on spending a good chunk of change on a new machine, why not send in the kirby for a rebuild? I believe the cost is $350, but essentially you end up with a new machine.

I completely agree about the NEW Royals. I had one, and loved the look of it and the power, but it was so loud that I couldn't stand to use it. It was like having an airplane in the living room!

How about one of the Hoover Decade Commercial vacs from Sam's Club. I think they run $139. Here's the link.

Best vacuum on Youtube highly recommends the Royal Everlast series. They have several videos of it in demonstration. It sounds pretty quiet in the video as you can still him talk while running it.

If you're thinking canister the Panasonic MC-CG902 is a good one. Reliable, easy to operate design with full size attachments. vcdiscounter.com usually has great prices and free shipping on many of their new vacuums.

The Hoover Decade style at sams club

I was doing checking and that particular model was made in China. Correct me if I'm wrong but most domestic Hoovers are made in Mexico. And my reccomendation would be if you wanted a non Kirby upright is the Panasonic MC-UG77.
