I read the old thread on 'Who has the earliest 652'. It was really interesting. I never knew the early ones had a bright red footswitch.

Here are a few photos of my 652. If the contest was 'who has the latest 652 I think this might win - serial no JS331850. According to the manual this dates from very late 1961. Production ended in January 1962. It has the late cloth bag.

The bail assembly is white because I put a spare white bail on it. Just thought it looked better than the pink one! All the other paintwork is original.

Wow, Jon!

Another stunning machine - and you're right, the white handle bail does look good. I think I'll leave the pink one on mine, though, for authenticity's sake!

That is a BEAUTIFUL machine!

I like the white bail, too........

But, I LOVE that cloth bag!!!

I wasn't aware that any of the Convertibles came with a cloth outer bag or was it only on British machines?

Thanks guys

Jack, I still have the pink bail so I can put it back for that totally original look!
em-tor64, I think it was only the late pink 652 in the UK which had the cloth bag. The early UK 652s had a plasticised pink bag.
All the best, Jon

Excellent!

What a great machine, and with the original plasticised bag - what year is it from? Love the hood and the reflection at the front.
You must have a good camera. Its really sharp picture, almost like a painting.

My God Jonathan & Jack....

those 652's are both truly superb examples!

That 'earliest 652 thread' was started by the chance find of a 652 on a skip in Chester - Mike was driving me and Rob to see his stored collection - the rest of that story can be read on the original thread!

Anyways, there has been some restoration work done to the skip find.

Although not perfect - does anyone know whether there is a simple way of removing the furniture guard? - it is a vast improvement on what the machine looked like when found.

I actually find the imperfections add to the look, as the machine will never be immaculate again, due to the bag being wrong and the bag hooks on the handle being wrong too.
Nothing can be done for the hood crack either (was like that when found) as the cracked edges cannot be remarried again due to the previous owners using some sort of filler to rig up their own hood attachment brackets. This has blocked the space in between the crack, preventing the two parts being pushed back together again. Hey ho.

anyway here are a couple of before shots:

and a couple of after shots:

still have to apply some wax to the furniture guard, to try and give it some colour depth again, rather than the slightly dried out, washed out look that the rubber currently has:

the bail also requires some pink applying to it.
We did buy some humbrol enamel pink - looked like it could have been the right shade in the shop, but when we got it home it is a tad too bright.
Might do some colour matching to try and get the correct shade made for it sometime.

and finally

Rob is making a suitably pink replacement bag cover. It wont be to anything like the original pattern, as (upto now) we cant find a similar cloth.
Current thinking is the bag will have a strip of pink ribbon running up it, on which will be printed the letters 'H' 'O' 'O' 'V' 'E' 'R'.

She will never be an outright beauty again and will never be able to reach the dizzy heights of immaculet-ness that both yours and Jack's examples are at, but we hope you will agree that she has been improved and, after all anything is better than being crushed under caterpillar tracks in landfill!

Cheers
Paul and Rob
p.s the picture on the left is just after we found her - the picture on the right is as she looks at the moment
p.p.s we will also be keeping our eyes peeled for pink cable....I will rue the day that we didnt buy the cable that was on ebay a few months ago.

Good job!

She looks so much better now! I love the way you rescued it. There must be many old vacs languishing in skips around the country. Sigh!

Looks like between us we might own the earliest and latest 652s.

All the best for your search for the pink bag and flex.
The grey 652A bag looks quite good on the pink machine. The trouble is finding one!

WOW!

Hey Jon

Ive NEVER seen that stunning type of bag before- all the cloth bagged 652s ive seen have a very similar bag to the 652A but with burgundy flecks in the grey and a vertical burgundy strip througn the HOOVER lettering. I especially like the way it has REG TRADE MARK under the HOOVER :).

Id defiantly put the Pink bail back on it tho !

Seamus

P,S I have a pink 652 with the type of cloth bag I mentioned with my name on so to speak- when it comes will be interesting to post pics or all 3 versions :).

PPS Rob/Paul nice work on yours to- will be interested to see Robs unique bag design!
