I Knew It Wasn't All That Great But I Didn't Think It Would Do THAT Bad!

Here is a video I made Today seeing how well the Dyson DC01 picked up a huge mound of flour, I went over it with the Hoover Turbopower and you can see for yourself just how much of a bad vacuum the Dyson DC01 really is.
I realise the new Dysons will be nowhere near as bad as this but for the time in 1993 when they came out you paid £199 for the Dyson DC01 and you could of got that same Turbopower Total System seen in the video for around £119, I think there is a HUGE difference in performance, just goes to show how many consumers wasted their money thinking they were getting a better machine with the Dyson.
Also notice at the end of the video when I picked up all the flour that the Dyson picked up into the Turbopower how it lost suction but not enough to lose performance.

That's the thing I've found about dysons. They pick up well on the surface, and do well on hard floors, but when it comes to deep cleaning they are quite mediocre. Not the worst I've ever seen, but not too great.

I agree, It did rubbish considering I LOVE Dyson. I think a DC14 would suit your needs for a Dyson, or a DC27, but you like Hoover better tho DC01 is 20 years old now and is still worth about £30 now that the parts are discontinued for them.

I only have that DC04 because it was my grandmas and she has past on so it just made sense to me to hold onto it as it has some memories behind it.
I have the DC01 Destijl because that was the vacuum we had when I was growing up, no matter how bad it is there is no way I can't not like it because of the amount of memories it brings, I really love the look and design of it.
I am not really a bagless or a Dyson fan so I only have those two for the reasons just stated, the new Dysons or any vacuums past 2003 simply don't interest me at all, as most of them just seam cheap and flimsy.
I trust the newer Dysons are better performers but not that good that I would pay over £300 for one, at least back in the day when you spent a fair amoutnt of money on a Hoover you were buying performance and a British made Machine.

Alex - you must remember that when Dyson brought out the DC01, it wasn't claiming to be the best for pick up. It's easy to slate it now after so many years - its biggest selling point was that it didn't require a bag and apart from its filter component, the other "unique" ability it had at the time as the fact that it had an all in one pull release hose and main handle spine.

Though Hoover had a bigger range, they certainly learnt that their Permabag system wasn't the best invented when it spilled out dust. We had a DC01 - two in fact. I much prefer the motor noise as its quieter than a lot of Dysons that have gone on beyond the original model.

I love the noise of the motor of the DC01, the Ameteck.

I know the DC01 was a good design but it did not perform up to it's price tag, the Permabag system 2 was way better than the original and in my opinion it is as good as a bag.
Going off at a bit of a tangent here but...
I personally think the main reason Dyson sued Hoover over the Vortex was because James Dyson was pissed off that Hoover made a much better machine than he did, in performance and practicality, you didn't need a silly little addaptor to use the tools on the end of the hose, it was better built, more powerful, was easier to clean the shroud and had lifetime washable filters.
All of these factors would of annoyed Mr Dyson which is why I believe was likely the main reason he took them to court, never the less I think the DC01 was more reliable in the long run but certainly not better.

I think you're missing the point, Alex.

Thing is Alex, you're missing my point - were you around when the Dyson DC01 was first launched? Who is to say what constitutes as "good performance" at that time? It is difficult thinking back now after all these years to why my parents bought the DC01 other than one very valid and one very important consideration.

Certainly from the time line of appliances my parents owned and having given me their Vax canister tub as well as their Oreck XL (thus beginning my collection) the DC01 was purchased simply because my parents were fed up having to buy Oreck dust bags direct from the UK company and at a time when the bags themselves were expensive at cost. This was at a time before the internet and online sellers were unheard of!

Thus it is easy to say that in your opinion you feel that the Permabag 2 was a better performer. I however don't. I think Dyson had a valid point to make about not having to buy dust bags. He just didn't concentrate on other areas of the vacuum that the established brands had already accomplished. And it was no fault of his own - he was never a manufacturer of vacuums to begin with.

If Hoover had actually produced a proper Permabag system without it leaking all the time, they could have cornered the market. As was, the system wasn't that popular, hence it only reaching the select models that Hoover chose to use the system with - it was only put on their upright range after all.

This brings me to the other point - the Dyson may well have required an adaptor to use for tools but Dyson quickly reacted and produced the next vacuum that didn't require an adaptor, thus lessons were learnt. I don't think Dyson got pissed off with Hoover though for Hoover having a better machine - just the mere use of the name "Vortex," - and in any eventuality, Dyson lost that court battle. Hoover played it well though - releasing the Vortex around the same time line when Dyson's other products appeared, so I think there were more politics going on than just a mere name similarity.
