I got another Power Tank :D

I got this on eBay for a buy it now of $20. I saw it when Kyle was over, and we were to busy fixing a computer that I missed it, and it had no bids. So I emailed the seller and gave it to me for $20. I only took 3 days to get here! It works pretty good. THe power nozzle was just a mess. The cord connecting the power nozzle to the wand was cut, and there wasn't enough cord left on the wand side to fix it, so I made it so there was no power nozzle outlet, and just one full cord. After making it all work out, I found out the power nozzle motor was siezed. And the neck to it was broken. So I just took the power nozzle off my other power tank and put it on here. Then I found another issue. WHen it's on, there is a buzzing noise you can hear, especially when it's on low, so I looked in the back vent, and there is some major sparking going on. So I am thinking the armature is bad? Or the brushes? If anyone knows please comment. But I am going to have my boss take a look at it. The only reason I bought this was because of the handle. I have always wanted one with all of the controls in it. Here are some pics.

did the seller not disclose it in the listing? but for 20 its worth it for the parts

iv got a bunch of royal uprights and NO tanks/canisters yet

Try using brush seater. I'd say 90% of the time when it does that on the low setting, you have a bad armature. If you need a motor, let me know- I think I have one sitting back from a trade in a few weeks ago.

Sounds like it's time for a motor overhaul (new brushes and bearings). Like he said, try using a brush seater, otherwise take it to a motor shop to have the commutator milled (not expensive). It would be exceedingly rare for the armature to be bad (shorted). Usually they just get worn, and need to be milled.

Since we're on the subject

My tank has developed (not constant) the habit of shutting the motor off unless I pick the tank up by the rubber carrying strap. When I do that, the motor comes back on and works fine. If I play with it for a minute, it will stop doing it. Obviously there's a short in there somewhere...is it an easy fix for someone who doesn't know how to get inside the machine?

What model of machine is it? Does it have the speed control on the hose handle, or the body of the machine? PowerTanks are really easy to work on- I'd be happy to post step by step photos.

I'll have to dig it out to see which model it is

The speed control is on the body of the machine. It's been a good machine but tends to be too hard on the hardwood floors when i use it, so it's been relegated to the basement

I have a Royal Power Tank, great vacuum. I can't use the power nozzle, there is a short in the hose. There was a spot that had a hose clamp wrapped with black electrical tape. It worked fine until I removed the tape and clamp. Mine doesn't have the controls on the handle.

Okay, most likely is that the wires that go to the potentiometer PCB are loose and not making a good connection.
