A few more pictures to round out the weekend trip.

Here, the Owners Guide for the Eureka 'Ham' Canister 1000 Series. I post these scans because, like me, there may be a few more fellers that would like to print them out. With just a bit more time splitting pages and editing one can convert them to double sided booklet form and create a stapled version like the original. Sometimes I will carefully remove the staples and scan them that way which saves the steps of re-arranging the pages yourself. :-) But not this time.

Note that the date blue-penciled on the cover is my and Fred Nelson's birthday, March 2. So, I was 15 years old in 1968...

Here we go, folks. Eureka Style "L" or 1000 Series bags to be used - not the same as the contemporary available Eureka Style "L" bag...not the least bit compatible.

This Guide covers all the 1000 Style canned hams. My green ham has only one exhaust outlet on the bottom and this is the only vent - must have blown unpicked-up dust hither and yon across the floor. LOL

Interesting to me that Eureka made no changes or improvements to the peculiar swing arm generous capacity bag support system used since its 1958 (?)introduction. But it is a slim compact cleaner packing a very powerful motor that glides along behind you on its 3 wheels. There is definitely room beside the motor to add the cordwinder reel as mentioned for later models.

No grass growin' under my feet...

It is growing out on the lawn since it's raining and thundering and as dark as Dorothy's Kansas today. Also a major heatwave has swept in so if it wasn't for the AC I'd be working naked and wiping my forehead a lot...however...currently 86 F and rising fast, from yesterday's mere 64 F.

Nothing for it but to deep-spa the 25. What fun since all the parts are intact other than the original bolt for the bale position lever. Found a suitable bojack bolt, with a 1/4" sleeve washer that rides nicely inside the grooves and stops.

That done, I turned my attention to the rusty brushroll and belt grooves on the motor with a wirewheel on the drill. A lot of packed dirt, mud and insect carcasses caught in cobwebs everywhere but a bristle brush, water, and a Kenmore vacuuming cleaned that up well enough. We're not talking a re-paint here. :-)

Took me a while of pondering to get the motor cap off - one bolt in the front under the band, who knew? - and as expected needs a real good cleaning. The Bakelite hood and band have been waxed and polished.

It's a real joy to find a machine in this complete but sadly neglected condition, as the re-furblement just gets better and better at each step.

I'm off now to get a 25 watt bulb as 15 watts is just too dim and unsuitable...

At work I found a perfect brown/red match for the handle paint...leather shoe paint, LOL. For now I have painted the rusty switch plate and sealed it under a matt clearcoat. The handle pole is not that far gone that it wants a painting but the yoke will get it.

I found evidence of the original light tan paint in a corner of the base. I really like the Hoover rebuild blue, tho. The hood band has a lovely transparent blue glaze that gives that blue glow to the lettering. yes, I know the cord is probaly too light a brown but it's the only one I had in the cord partz bin, dammit. The vintage rubber replacement plug looks good, I think.

You done right, Dave -

I think you were wise to leave the rebuild blue as-is. It was actually a rarity to see these 25s as rebuilds, so preserving what the factory did to it is important. Come to think of it, since the factory is no more, preserving any of the Specials is taking care of a part of Hoover's past...
 
No 25 watt bayonet base bulbs to be found at hardware stores. I'll go to Ellison's Shop tomorrow - he'll have some.

Dropped in to the Goodwill on the way back from gassing up. Found this lovely Bratz radio control car with opening doors with latch handle buttons that work, fully detyailed interior with fold forward seats w seatbelts, a removable sunroof and an opening trunk. Bratz are apparently anorexic gurls with really really large heads...mmm...great role models, eh?

Well, in honor of the G.I.Joe movie coming out we present a captionless photoplay titled "Lumberjack Dave meets Joe in uniform by the side of the road"...was it really a flat tire?

On a more realistic note, this is the new 2010 Subaru Outback. The only thing about it I like is the colour. It's HUGE and looks like everyone else's SUV. Shame on Subaru for eliminating the frameless windows, wrap-around greenhouse glass and unique Subaru style overall. BOOOOOO!!HISSSSS!!

The Legacy is now only available as a framed side window sedan, styled completely different and is equally bland from any angle.

BORING in the extreme.

Subaru is either gonna sell a lot of these to bland people or will experience a backlash loss of new sales to Subaru aficionados. All the Subie folks I've talked to, including salesmen, are thumbs down at this new look.

I have my feelers out for a 2005 to 2007 Legacy GT Limited with the turboed boxer in dark blue or black.

Very nice find Dave - it was in very good restorable shape for it's age, and you got rid of that rust nicely. One thing I HATE when working on old cleaners is rust... it's a four letter word! I think your belt was on backwards in the photo though, if I reviewed it correctly. I'm sure you were just in a hurry to fire it up and see how it worked. Just teasing. Oh, where did the lumberjacks pants go!? Hopefully they remembered to check the oil.

Hey, do you remember those "Soldiers Of The World" dolls Walmart and other places had back in the '90s?

I'm getting really old, deep down inside I still love those great old boats from the '50s through the early '80s, but I like a lot of the new vehicles out today. I almost got a new '06 Dodge Caliber until my wonderful brother and my lawyer crushed my dream. Now I have a '00 Nissan Xterra. When I win Lotto I am getting one of these:

My family owned the exact Mercury you posted only it was not red. It was my mom's car and ours was a more subdued cream color, but it did have the "wood" siding. Dad traded in the 1957 because Mom grew very frustrated with the nuances of the pushbutton transmission, which repeatedly got stuck in reverse. Mercury went back to column shifters in 1959 and that car proved to be more reliable. We kept it until it was traded for a white 1962 model. Nothing but Lincoln/Mercury for our family. The first was a 1951 Sport Sedan and mom's last car was her beloved 1968 Cougar XR7 GT with the 390 4 bbl, which she drove until she passed away in 1994. I still own the car today.

Next time you come to my house i have brand new brush strips for the Hoover Junior for you. Yes i found them AND i have a HOSE and CONVERTER for your beautiful 25 from me. Congrats and it looks beautiful!!

I figure I can get another 2-3 years out of my 1998 Legacy GT Limited wagon if necesary to get a 2007 Legacy wagon. They changed the grill in 2008 and I don't like it.

I don't like the 2005-09 Outback because I won't pay extra for plastic frou-frou plastered over the wheel wells and I don't need 8" ground clearance.

I DO need a sleek 'Astroboy/Elroy Jetson' road rocket AWD wagon that can take a 9 foot organ pipe in the rear with the front passenger seat reclined. with leather interior, a power seat and sunroof and all the bells and whistles, cause I'm spoiled, I am. The Legacy is simply a cleaner aerodynamic design than the Outback. :-)

Here's a 2007 in the light blue. The dark blue is more like Navy Blue.

I hope this thread is not so boring that the owner of a Mobi

Well, now the 25 is safely pretty enough to set aside I'm tackling the Eureka 1010 ham (I apologize for mistakenly referring to it as a 1020, that's my copier security code :-))

I mentioned earlier that the gold raised script is gone from the lid - but 'obile air' is intact on both sides; this leaves six 1/8" vent holes in the lid that seriously affect the suction potential. More importantly it just looks wrong. :-) Sure I cold tape over the holes and get a test reading but what I'm really interested in is printing the script on adhesive backed paper, cutting it out meticulously and applying it to the lid for a simulation.

Been searching the www half the night looking for this exact script that I could re-size and colour and highlight in gold. No luck other than fuzzy angled pictures that are only a guide for free-hand interpretation, at which I have no drawing skill. I have the software to manipulate anything to fit but twice life size would do nicely.

Does someone have a Mobil-Aire readily available that you could take a steady, sharp very high-rez digital photo and email it to me? I would recommend a direct on shot without flash - take the 1010 into the daylight and it's unlikely you'd need a tripod. Doesn't matter how large the file is, I can handle it.

Thankyou Kyle, that's great news! Each Junior had one bristle-less strip and one barely usable so I put both on the dark brown one with the original cord and they are barely effective. But the hose is a treat and I have a set of tools for it or something Hoover of the same age anyway! Going to have to locate a bag bezel ring for the burgundy DVC bag. They both run fine.

One day when the Mobil-Aire is presentable I'll celebrate with Green Eggs and Ham...

Oh Robb.......

Your parents sound like my kind of people! I love those early Cougars, truly one of the best cars L/M came up with! We had a '51 Mercury Club Coupe until June of 1962, when it was traded for a '57 Chevrolet 210 2 door sedan. Our first "fancy" car was a 1970 Pontiac LeMans 4 door sedan. Other cars were in the picture here.

Dave, the Subaru wagons are very appealing, the 2007 is really spiffy looking.
