I can't understand why this lovely G.E. didn'ty get any bids...

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

Yuck! I saw that on eBay. I had one just like that from next door when I was a kid, it wasn't even that rusty, but the side had a hole rusted through it!

Hmm

Power spray the disgusting off. Let it dry, sandblast it and primer it, then paint. When you spray off clean the hose.
It's more of a makeover instead of spa treatment. It's not the vacuum's fault his owner is lazy and negligent.

1. I can't even imagine why anyone would have even listed that vacuum for sale.

2.It is no secret we are a ambitious group when it come to reviving vintage machines. How ever I can't imagine any of us are that crazy.

I think some of that rust is more than just surface rust. You'd have to use a lot of Bondo to smooth that out. And I think some of that rust will likely break through if you sandblasted it. "Not worth messing with" IMO.

Burn

Melt the metal recycle the hose. It's going to clog up a landfill. Im optimistic but I'm not a glutton for punishment.
This thread is giving this vacuum more attention than it had its entire existence.

"It was a low end, bottom of the line machine when it was new. It should be sent to the crusher. GE made millions of those, they are not rare in any way. "

That was 60 years ago. The more people throw them out, the rarer they become. Same reason why Shetland vacuums are hard to find. Same reason even why the Hoover Z-series are so rare, because Hoover threw all the parts away. Nobody could fix theirs so all the people that bought them on clearance for $50-$80, eventually just threw them out.

Well, it also has to do with build quality. Shetland from what I've heard used PLASTIC suction fans, and alot of companies cheaped out using sleeve bearings versus ball bearings. I would love to add a nice Kenmore Duo-Power upright to go with my Dial-A-Matic collection but they're rarer than hen's teeth nowadays because I'm sure the build quality was nowhere near as good. The ONLY vintage vacs I see with any frequency come into our shop are Electroluxes and Kirbys. Once in a blue I may see an old Hoover Convertible or a Concept One.

After seeing the "demo" review of that Shetland vacuum-the sound of its motor during spindown-the imperfection of the plastic fan.Never seen that in a canister before.Must be a single stage fan system.Bet you could reveal a lot by taking the screws out of the top of the motor.I wonder if this little vacuum could be "pimpted" by refitting it with a better dual stage or modern taper fan motor? In its own sort of way a cool little vacuum-just needs a better motor-fan system. This is for sure the basic of basic.Would probably do for folks with all hard floors. The single layer paper bags are for sure going to let a lot of fines into the motor-and into the air you are breathing-YOU are the final filter for this machine. Its just humble and cool in its little way.Sort of sad the "big wheel" lewyts went down to this!
