The past week when vacuuming, I noticed a ssssssss sound coming from the area where the hose meets the handle, but I couldn't see anything loose so I went on to vacuuming. Well, yesterday I inspected more closely and underneath where the hose meets the handle there is a TEAR in the flexible hose, but since it's flexible when in vacuuming carpet mode, it isn't stretched so it was keeping most of the airflow.

The vacuum was bought at BB&B in NOV 2014 (3 years old). I called Shark today and told them and at first, they said that's considered a wearable part and it would be 29.99 plus shipping. Then I told them I could not afford that and maybe I would just try to tape it. Then they offered me 50% off and I said no. Then finally they said as a one-time courtesy they would ship for free if I paid the $6.95 shipping, which I did.

I'm trying to remember if I've ever had a hose get a rip it in that soon and I can't think of it. Granted, I use it averaging about 5 days per week for 3 years. But I've always handled it with care and I'm the only one who uses it.

This reminds me

Just today we had a lady drop off a Simplicity for the person she cleans for kept complaining about how heavy the Simplicity (S20D) was and said she's a Shark girl herself. I then said the problem with shark is they don't provide parts to shop suppliers. She's like oh it's not a problem i have a lifetime warranty. I told her there's got to be a catch to it. She said there was not, and they replaced the entire vacuum once after they said it couldn't be fixed.

After doing a little (and I do mean a little) research i found this. So basically the unit breaks down they send out a free one and the lifetime warranty is over.

well so far

my experience with them has not been bad. Once I called and they sent me a 2nd set of filters for free. This call was a little different but finally I got the part for free except for shipping.

But that literature above doesn't mention anything about the hose being considered a normal wear and tear part. I understand filters, but not the hose. My cord is also frayed so I put some electrical tape around the fray. It's the part of the cord that is the first bend when you wrap the cord for storage.

your's did pretty good. Most die of performance failure like an air leak and end up in the trash after 2 to 3 years. I see them at the curb all day long.
Shark has loyal repeat customers like our kids too though.
 
poor quality

This is just another example of the poor quality of these machines, it's surprising that so many people buy them, either they don't know that there are much better machines available or they don't want to pay a bit more for better quality and don't mind replacing their vacuum every couple of years.

I'm NOT getting another bagless when this dies... But I gotta say, this thing is a pleasure to use it's so easy to run through the house to get all the berber, then lift away and carry the unit around with the hard floor tool getting hard floors like kitchen and bath. No dust leaks at all either.

I don't use it for above floor cleaning - I don't like the tools.

It's certainly NO quality vacuum when comparing it to higher end vacuums, but when you compare one of these to those 70 dollar plastic vacuums this is well made in comparison to those. I just wish it were bagged and not bagless.
 
that's interesting how they negotiate the price like that.

Well when you do consider upgrading I have found the sebo Felix to be a good choice it has most of the good features of the shark without the bad features like lack of quality and being Bagless too narrow of a nozzle.

I checked out the Sebo Felix and you're right - it does pretty much everything Shark does with hepa bags and easy bag change. What worries me is the filter cost - There's the motor protection filter and what looks like this large external filter that is disguised as the design of the vacuum - it's 50 dollars per filter on Ebay!
 
No new vacuum will clean as good as an old vacuum. I never have bought a new vacuum, I just use whatever I can pick up at the thrift shop for $10 until I get bored of it or find something "cooler". have a Kirby Ultimate G that was the only vacuum I owned but its gradually fell apart and needs a full tune up and service and some bits replaced. I was using a Panasonic for a bit that I really liked. Still like my Altima I used throughout 2014.
 
Sebo Felix

I was also going to suggest the Sebo Felix, I much prefer canisters so it's not a vacuum I would choose to have but that's personal preference. It sounds like it's similar to how the Shark works, but it's definitely made much better. You can actually remove the power nozzle and attach a hard floor brush, this is far better than most uprights which just allow you to turn off the brush roll, and some uprights don't even allow for that. Of course, nothing beats the flexibility of a power team canister.

The Sebo Felix looks awesome and I know it's well made. I'd LOVE to have one -- But that microfilter cost is outrageous. The bags and the motor-filter are doable, but it's that microfilter that you have to buy to match the design of whichever Sebo Felix model you have. They are all like 40 to 50 dollars. I think I read they need to be replaced after every 10 bags or something. I don't see how much would get past the hepa bag and motor filter, so I'm guessing the microfilter is just for carbon dust.

The outer filter is available on Amazon for $40. I'm not sure if you have to change it that often, however, because the Sebo bags filter very well. I don't have a Felix but would like to have one.

An alternative you might look at that is bagged, is the Miele Quick Step. It is a bagged machine with very good filtration, you have a choice of power nozzles as well as straight suction nozzles. A hose kit is available, though not as convenient as the Felix. Very quiet. I picked one up on ebay for quick clean ups. My only, complaint is that it is too tall with the power nozzle which makes the position I must hold the handle difficult on my wrist.

I'm thinking the bags obviously don't filter carbon dust, do they? So that's left up to another filter, which I'm thinking is that expensive outer filter....the weird thing is is that I've seen absolutely NO aftermarket options for that microfilter. I see aftermarket Hepa bags, motor filters, but not the microfilter. I wonder why?

I can't afford 699 for this though. I already have a rainbow/Sirena, but I only use those when I'm cleaning high and low, not daily run-throughs. The Sirena was such a stupid unnecessary purchase for me but I wanted to try it out. I like it, but I don't need that And the Rainbow. I wish I could somehow trade. LOL
 
I agree that bagged vacuums need a comeback. Shake-out bags exist for a reason. The lack of bagged machines in department store brands is what makes them irrelelevent.
