Hi all. I am somewhat new to vacuumland and was wondering if anyone had any feedback about my most recent soon-to-be daily driver, a Hyla NST. I found this on craigslist for $90 and it appears to have been very lightly used. I have been impressed with it the couple times I've used it to vacuum and mop but don't know too much about them. If anyone has ideas or any known issues to look out for let me know. Thanks!

Hyla NST is not the latest model, the GST is. However, if you got a lightly used NST for 90 dollars, that's a STEAL!
Not sure they are as well built as Rainbow, from what I hear they aren't - but they are just as expensive. Supposedly the separator is self-cleaning; not sure how that's possible, but who knows. Can you put a wet q-tip in the separator and see if there is any dirt on it?
There are a couple of people here who own them so I'm sure they will chime in.

Yes I couldn't pass on it for the price... Even with the trip from Indy to Evansville to pick it up it was still a good deal.
I tried the wet q-tip and it came out clean so apparently that part is true. The Rainbow is probably better built and is MUCH easier to find part, accessories etc. for since they are more popular.

I bought a new Hyla last year. Mine is a GST but I think they are about the same.
I gave a report on mine last year but it was in comparison to my Black Rainbow.
What I can tell you about mine after using it for over 1 year is:
(1) no dust leaking
(2) no sign of dust anywhere on the machne or exhaust
(3)no ordors from machine
(4) power nozzle very aggressive,may need to be careful with use on delicate rugs
(5) Very very good Hyla deordorizer they sell for use in the machine
(6) be careful with the electric hose
(7) we had a beautiful Hyla store in Carmel. They have since closed.
You are now forced to deal with the main number in Florida,so parts may be expensive. The Hyla dealer I bought from were very nice and not high pressure.
I don't want to get into a comparison with the NEW Rainbow as I have presented that before but if you have any questions about the Hyla ,send me and email. I will glad to help. Sounds like you got a good buy!

I wonder how it keeps the seperator clean? My rainbow seperator gets a little dusty but nothing really bad. I did take it off the machine when I first got it & let it soak in the sink with bleach water for a couple hours, but it has never gotten filthy like scrubbing it. Since reading this post I was wondering about the Hyla because I remember back in the late 1995 I saw one at the vacuum shop sitting on the counter, it was on but I didn't pay that much attention to it as I thought it was a cheap knock off to compete with the Rainbows. Euro-pro made a machine like it called the Shark bagless water filteration vacuum. I found it in the spring & summer JCP catalog 2004. It looks just like the Hyla without the electric hose & power nozzle for original $249.99; now $199.99. Mark
