How much for this Tri-star?

It runs good .
There is a crack in the hose by the handle .
It is in ver good condition , but need a really good clean up.
The asking price is $40

How much shall I pay for it?

Just my opinion but . . .

I'd say $40 is a steal for what is a very good, well made and repairable vac. Most of the red TriStars were the two speed model, the only one of the classic Compacts or TriStars to feature a two speed motor. If so there will be a white speed swtich to the right of the handle, hidden by the cord in the pic. It also has a good TriStar nameplate; these are often broken by careless handling. Replacements are available but they don't look like the original.

I paid about $40 plus shipping off eBay for a red two speed model without the hose or power brush. It does run, but unfortunately needs bearings - not that this was mentioned in the ad. Even so I was pleased to have a rare model in good cosmetic condition.

$40 on a TriStar in my mind sounds pretty good. You could try offering $30 or $35 and see if they take it but I think $40 sounds fair. I haven't had the pleasure of trying one of these yet, but I've heard they're one of the best built and performing cleaners ever!!!

Could search eBay and see if there are any generic hoses to replace it. I guess the question is the damage in the plastic handle or hose material? Cause hoses can be shrunk or just replace actual hose material.

If you want a TriStar, this is a very good deal as long as the motor is in good shape.

That hose is expensive, but some careful shopping on eBay will save you some money.

Take your time shopping for a new hose - thinking that you have to find one right away could end up costing you more money than you'd spend otherwise.

I'd spend some time shopping eBay for a couple of weeks and get the feel of the market before doing the deal on one.

I paid $25 for mine, but found out after I had bought it the motor was on its last legs. I tracked down a new (used) motor, which was somewhat difficult because it was a 2 speed. The motor I found was from a Filter Queen. I say go for it, as long as the motor sounds good. $35 sounds good to me, mine pulls an insane amount of dirt out of our carpets. If you do buy it, make sure you wash the cloth bag and filters by hand with laundry detergent, preferably something that smells good. I never get a dusty or dog smell from mine, and I love that.

I think $40 is a great deal.. Super easy machine to work on, for disassembly and cleaning. I paid $125 for one not too long ago... I love it; it's about all I've been using since I got it. Sandy is right, keep an eye open for deals on eBay, and you will eventually have a really nice machine! Love the red, too...

Worth a Try:

If the seller takes $35, great. But if he balks, I'd just cave in and close the deal at $40.00. Not worth losing a good TriStar over $5.00.

Just so you know...........

This is NOT the 2 speed model. The 2 speed model had the handle and switch pedal integrated into one piece of metal. This one has the vinyl handle strap.

Even Better!

The two-speed TriStars seem to have a higher failure rate than the one-speed models, and I've never in my entire life figured out why two speeds would be needed on a vacuum anyway. I've had a couple with two speeds and never used the feature.

I hope Brad can tell us soon whether he got the vac!
