I was wondering how many of these Canadian Luxes are floating around in Vacuumland. The machine below is one of the favorites in my collection. I was thrilled to find the matching power nozzle recently, after a 7 year hunt. I know that AeolianDave has a nice grouping of the red and beige set of Lux products, and am curious how many of these, as well as the later two-tone green models are still with us.

I always wondered why more of those never wondered into the states. They're quieter, don't tip over as easily as the Auto G, and they have an after filter. I'd love to find one.

I have a Canadian 30, 54, 55 and 89. They are all wonderful machines and each is considerably powerful than the American contemporaneous machines. Especially the 89.

My 54:

I can't find the photos of my 30 and 55, and the machines are packed in storage.

Here's a "wet dream" 88 that was on eBay a few years ago. I was outbid by one other person.......

I Remember Seeing

That red Lux in the Van Nuys CA Electrolux branch and almost peeing in my pants. Never saw anything like it. Anyway I later found out these were Canadian. While I would love to find a red one, my dear friend Tania provided me with a beautiful green specimen. Don't know the model numbers off the top of my head, but you guys probably do.

Charles,
You have a lovely collection there! I've always been fond of the gray machine with those delicious red bakelite ends. I have one similar, perhaps a 57? in beige and brown with brown bakelite ends, but the rear end of the skis is propped up on a set of wheels that mount to the skis via cast aluminum brackets. This was done to incorporate a cord reel. The paint matches, and appears to be a factory addition. It was my second lux, and for $2 complete with original tools it has been an excellent, quiet machine for years. I had a green 89 as a daily driver years ago, but it was the red and beige machines that really made my navel tingle, so I decided to concentrate on those. Do you happen to have any of the matching floor polishers?

Michael

Here is my 57(not positive on model no.) I apologize for the poor quality photo; this is all that I have access to at the moment.

My 54 also has a cord winder now -- I found it later and added it but don't have any photos of it at hand.

Those clever Canadians really did devise a much more practical way to access the blower on machines fitted with a cord winder. With the Canadian version, you simply pull on the top of the cord winder. The bottom is hinged and it opens right up to get to the blower. This is much easier than the American versions, especially the early ones that you had to physically remove from the machine to use the blower.

Fred, I remember the first time I saw a maroon 88. It was in that enormous "yard o' vacs" that Stan Kann and I went to see one day. (See link.)

I saw the rear end of an Electrolux tank sticking out from one of the piles of vacuums. At first, I thought it was a G that some idiot had painted maroon! But when I pulled it out of the pile and saw it was a completely different model, one that I had never seen before, I just totally plotzed on the spot!

There was the woven hose, telescoping wand [bizarre in its own right] ... and ... what the heck???? A maroon Model XXX-type rug tool!!! This was the craziest thing I'd ever seen! It was like an Electrolux from an alternate reality or something! I finally looked closely enough at it to discover that it was a Canadian model. "Whew knew??!"

Ahem!

There will be NO navel tingling here on the forum....

Michael, you're new - so I'll let you go with just a warning this time.

A cool Canadian Electrolux ad

Somewhere, I have a color brochure on the two-tone brown and tan 58 Mike showed above. I know I scanned it, but I can't find it on my hard drive. But I did find this, which I had forgotten I had.

Hello! and welcome, fellow Canadian Ontarian.

"There will be NO navel tingling here on the forum.... "

Since you didn't mention it I assume Naval Twingling is still all right, eh?

But I digress...

Green Electrolux 87's and 89's (1967 - 1973) seem to be fairly plentiful, the red/maroon 86's and 88's (1963 - 1967) less so and the rarest of the style are the cream & red trim models 83 & 86 (1957 - 1963).

My theory about Canadian models found in the United States (*that weren't collector imports*) is that they are Snowbird Retiree items transported with household goods to Florida and Arizona in the main. Hose couplers are not inter-compatible (entirely different sizes) between Canadian and American Electrolux's but the wand diameter and tools are.

Matching Polishers & Shampooers? Why, yes! The stylishly triangular BX-10 polisher with detachable shampoo/detergent/liquid wax solution dispenser tank came in Cranberry Red. Pete has the red Polisher-only version. I also have an all chrome BX-10 polisher that was introduced for the previous Electrolux 'breadloaf' series 50 models. The triple brush design is European.

L-R: 88 version 2, BX-10, 86 version 2, 88 version 1. Nite, the 86 did not have the 'Magic Brain' full bag detector, which pops the bag lid and shuts off the motor.

With the 1967 green models 87 & 89 CanLux introduced the all new folding Model B-21 polisher Shampooer in matching green that was continued virtually unchanged (except for the motor hood slight re-design) in colors matching subsequent Electrolux vacuum models through +two decades! The AP, E, LE, System 90 and 2100 series (1967-1989). Yes, there is a blue (Jadestone) & gray one for the LE and a maroon one for the 2100. The Fudge Brown one on the right goes with the AP 280 (1978-1982).

Hey Mike you'll have to get in touch to come down to our next vacuum mini meet here in Sarnia,, who knows when, they just sort of happen.
My electrolux chest looks to be the same as the one Charls posted above.. without the caster.. though I keep my green 89 in it.

Dave,
Thank you for answering a question for me. I had been wondering what the difference between the red w/cream trim vs. cream w/red trim machines was. I had thought perhaps it was a price difference, but now it all makes sense.
I saw a cream w/red trim machine recently, but passed it up because they wanted $50 and it didn't have a cord reel, just the manual cord wrap bell like my Royal power team( I loath manually winding cords on those machines, especially if the rubber trim is gone; I end up cutting my knuckles)
I'd love to find an original Lux hassock for my 88. The red and and white hassock that I have currently is not labeled(can be seen in the picture of my machine at the beginning of this thread)but was in great condition and serves a purpose right now.
Pete,
I'd love to join you at a semi-local mini-meet. Please keep me informed if you plan one.
Rick,
Did you by chance purchase that 89 on Ebay a couple of years ago?

Michael

What nice units you all have!

Of the two red/beige hoses that I've got, one is EXTREMELY leaky but cosmetically intact, the other is fraying but still quite usable. As far as Canadian Elux's on skis, I don't think I've ever encountered a hose that is still usable. Either they are terribly rigid and brittle or they hold about as much air pressure as a window screen! Having hardwood through 85% of the house, the ski machines don't see too much use anyhow.

Hey Michael:

If you want to see the whole series of Canadian Electroluxes and their dates etc take a look at my web page. www.dkas1.50megs.com I have the whole set in my collection as well as a couple dozen spares that I have been slowly rebuilding and either trading or selling.

Wow Douglas! What an impressive collection!

I've been trying to find manufacturing dates for the line of Canadian Elux products for over ten years; none of the shops around here will really give me the time of day regarding old "junk" machines. Thank you for spelling it all out for me!

Did you gather those machines during your time working for Electrolux, or did you find them elsewhere?

The 50's and early -mid 60's were recession years for Windsor, which probably explains why I find more Z's here than 80's. Great work! Thank you for preserving them and posting your link.

Michael

Hey Michael:

Actually I had most of those before I went to work for Electrolux. My knowledge of the machines was one of the reasons I was hired (The fact that I had the first two levels of the electricians course didnt hurt either) I think I was the first repair man that they had hired (at least here) that was actually qualified to do the repairs without being trained.

As long as you know the decade in which the old Electroluxes were made (old as in up to the E2000) you can get the exact date from the serial number. Eg: An alligator skin model ZB55 (1949-53) with a serial number beginning with 1 was made in 1951.

If you need any repair parts let me know - I have a basement full.

Doug

Oh WOW.

The 88 with the hassock is...I'm speechless.

That is number one one my dream machine list now. I'd kill for one. The Lux itself is something to admire, but that hassock...love the Compacts with hassocks (fortunate to own a very nice C6 complete and original C6 in the hassock).

I just can't stop drooling over that Electrolux...
