How many of us sell vacuums?

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

Candles, handvacs, broomvacs, compact canisters, cleaning products. I would take a pic of the shampooer display, but we are out of Royal extractors- TTI says 2 more days, but they have been on order for 2 weeks.

Christopher,

You have a beautiful shop and a lovely showroom. How upset are you that your landlord stuck you with hardwood floors for a vacuum store??? I would be. It seems like it would be difficult to demonstrate them unless you have a lot of rugs around. I think that your cross merchandising the candles with the vacuums makes a lot of sense. I think that people who are actually willing to pay for a respectable vacuum are also the kind of people who want their home to smell nice. How do you do on sales of the candles? Do you sell Hoovers new or are those just meticulously clean used models in the third picture? Sorry to ask so many questions, I am very curious and I think I like vacuum stores just as much as I like vacuums.

Everything on the floor with the exception of the Kirby and Rainbow are new. The Kirby and Rainbow are there to remind customers that we do work on them and carry products for them. I actually put the hardwoods in myself. We sell about 60% canisters out of this store and it is so much easier to sell with hard floors. We do have several grades of rug in the store.

Lovely store Christopher

Yes hard wood floors are a must in a vacuum store these days. We had a small section and now are doing a much larger one, most houses these days have hard flooring somewhere in them if not most of the house. If customers can't see it work on hard flooring then they don't buy.

It also has a more upmarket feel to it.

Interesting... I don't know any vac shops with hardwood floors in them, even just in sections. People who deal with me never ask about hard floor cleaning. Why would anyone buy a vacuum for hard floors, why wouldn't they just sweep it with a broom?

Basically because sweeping puts dust into the air again. In SA 75% of houses have hardflooring in the lounge kitchen family room entrance hall and passages.with only the bedrooms carpeted , a  further 15 % have no carpets at all with only 10% of houses here been wall to wall carpets.

I have cats and proper origin pine flooring in my house with certain rooms carpeted . you could never sweep the floor you would end up just spreading fur everywhere. we vacuum the hard wood fooring with a Electrolux Ultra one.

Most of the vacuums we sell will vacuum majority hard flooring.

come to columbus !

Sean
come to Columbus, and I'll take you to Carmens Vacuum cleaner sales and service. They are the largest Hoover dealer and one of the major Dyson dealers in the Mid west. Their North store opened about 3 years ago, with complete hard surface floors in it. I was appauled, could not imagine not a piece of carpet but a walk off matt at the door. Now 3 years later they do have 9x12 rugs of different pile heights in 3 or 4 different areas of the display. Which is much better, for both needs. I know people who buy dysons who have 80% hard surface in there house. Because they would rather vacuum with an upright than a cannister.
Christopher, I know the south has always been a big seller of Cannister, tank cleaners for decades. Especially Electrolux, now rainbow.
Just my experience thoughts on the issue of hardwood floors in a vacuum sales shop!

Norm,
I've heard about Carmens from a friend of mine who owns three vac shops in Fort Wayne but have not had the opportunity to shoot up there. I would love to come up to Columbus and make a day of it.

Most of the Dyson dc25's we sell go into homes with mostly hard flooring with scatter rugs in them, it cleans so well on both that it is a great choice for a multi surface house

Maybe that's why Dysons are so popular overseas... They don't have any carpet to clean, so why would they need a good vacuum?

Candles...

We sell candles, tons of scents, humidifiers, heaters, and air purifiers. The store's 40 year old name is Vacuums Etc. So anytime someone says, "Oh I didn't know yall sold...." We always say that's what the "etc." means.

Our other product lines work really well with our current vacuum selection. About 15% of our gross new product sales are not vacuum cleaners and 30% of our counter sales have nothing to do with vacuums.

i got rid of all my carpet for congoleum commercial solid sheet vinyl flooring that looks like hardwood...i have demo carpets but consumers respond much better to having hard surfaces in the showroom....go to my web site at sweepercentral.com you can see in the videos of what it used to look like with carpet then go to showroom pics to see what it presently looks like

The other problem with carpet is that , and this sounds so pathetic, it gets dirty all the time, We have a lovely light colored carpet in our showroom , when clean it looks wonderfull but all it takes in bubble gum stuck on some ones shoe that leaves a messy stickyness allover the carpet , or a good rain and mud.

I was spending more time cleaning carpet at one stage than selling vacuums.

demo carpets and hard wood flooring are the way to go. It just looks so much more upmarket too

Depending on your dealership size, you get them free from the manufacturer. They do not ever give them out to individuals, you must be a dealer. They are called POS (point of sale) items designed to influence buyers.

From the manufacturers, or your rep.

You can have them made, I am busy having a Vacuum Cleaner House one made $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Fubby thing but as usual the first one is really expensive about $ 1200.00 but its good quality I decided to have 4 made and thats only $2800.00 you pay for the set up time on the machinery.

I have Dyson, Bissell, Aeg , Electrolux Vorwerk ones on the floor but in my storage I have a few Hoover ones and two sebo ones and a really old Electrolux one from the 50's with Electrolux stitched into the carpet. its new and wrapped up some were. I must get it out and take some photo's

MANY ...

Years ago I sold Rainbows..D-3s, and Electroluxes, and also worked in a vac shop in Boone NC, 1982-1985,which sold Airway, Turbotronic, and Panasonic.I also learned sewing machine repair there.
