The Vortex/Hurricane story is a heck of a story!
When the early vortex models came out (the red and white ones and the Vortex power in blue and black), they used a high efficiency dust separation cyclone like a Dyson. However, it infringed on Dysons patent and Dyson sued Hoover over the design, meaning they could no longer produce Vortex machines of that design. Hoover scrapped the high efficiency cyclone design and rebadged the machines as "Hurricane" and stuck a low efficiency, direct filter cyclone it. A great shame, as I found the Vortex to be much higher performing than the DC01 and DC03, but it was a complete rip off of the DC01's cyclone

The Hoover Triple Vortex was not quite the same as the Dyson DC01.
The Dyson had two cyclone stages. The Hoover had a recycling concentrator stage between the two "Dyson" stages.
The Court found that the mid-stage did not deposit dust, so was similar in concept to Dyson's patent.
The white Hoover Triple Vortex was actually a very pale grey with aubergine and orange trim. It had foam filters initially, that let dust through. On sale from Easter 1999.
The red Triple Vortex had an S-Class pleated exhaust filter, on sale from September of that year.
The pale grey version was later sold with a better exhaust filter. There was also a Whirlwind model in pale grey with black trim and manual flex storage; a yellow Cyclone model; a blue Cyclean model (had polythene "bin liners" for hygienic dust disposal).
The court case happened, the Triple Vortex was discontinued and Hoover launched the Vortex Power along with the Hurricane:
the Vortex Power had about the same suction as the DC04, the Hurricane had suction similar to the DC07. Both used pleated filters in the bin.

I loved the suction on the hurricane, it was a beast to push and pull> At least until a few rooms in and then the filter was blocked and it easy glided everywhere..
The vortex i liked, but its suction was a little naff. It was easier to empty than the DC01, but as the shroud was smaller in diameter than the dyson's and hidden, many peple i know who had them didnt clean them and burnt out there motors.
Personally i preferred the DC01 with the non-swivel sole plate to the vortex. Easy to use the tools, didnt fall over. Quicker to maintain and stuck to the floor! Loves it!

I don't know what DC01's you were using, but I personally found the suction of the DC01 to be severely underwhelming. Coupled with a poorly designed brushroll (which is still one of my biggest annoyances with Dyson 18 years on), it made for a very average performing machine, especially compared with other vacuums on the market at the time. My Panasonic MC-E553 from 1996 has WAY more suction power than any DC01 I've ever used.

The DC01 (& DC03) could only generate 90 Air Watts of suction power, similar to the Hoover Triple Vortex.

Heres a couple of pictures of the models I have collected while living in the London, also have the both the first two Triple Vortex in gray and red new in box back in storage in OZ, I just loved the look of these machines.

Thats the one i tried, i loved it. I found that it worked really well for a hoover and must have been some compition to dyson. I have also never ever seen a dc01 lift a carpet. Only ever was the side where the suction goes in on a rubber mat lifted it about half an inch.
However the Dc01 is my favourite model and i have nearlly all models: De stijl, standerd and blue.
P.S if anyone does not have a vortex or hoover cyclone they dont want anymore i will pay a reasonable price.

I wish I could get one of those hoovers here, I have one dc01 and its ok but I think many of the bagged vacuums of its time had better suction . Hoovers have always cleaned carpets better than any of these competition

Their motors have a huge part in it i think. The ones with YDK motors in seam alot more powerful compared to the ametek ones. My standerd and blue dc01 have the ydk motors and are deffinatly more powerful the de stijl with YDK. The Ametek are quieter and have a nice sound to them but some videos bring out an ear pircing sound.

i had 5 dc01 standards 1 ametekl 5 ydks the ydk has more power there fore cleans much more better and well
my Cousin used to have a white hoover triple vortex -it was broken but ti was quiet i think and very good the brush stopped turning but suction was okay i believe

The first first first DC01's? With the different mechanism to hold the machine upright? Slightly shorter more flexible hose? Non swivel sole plate that seal more suction into the floor? its great!
The good thing i like about a DC01 (and dyson machines without a clutch is) is the triple row brushroll.
Also worn DC01's lose suction where the head pivots, to the point where it no longer seals and loads of air is sucked in the, rather than been directed to the floor head.. Make sense?

First DC01
Was The DA001. Made about 1992 in the first Dyson factory in Chippenam. It had the older style logo on it. I had a Dyson DC01 whick I believe was made between the DA001 and the first DC01's, as there were parts with different Dyson logos on. I sold mine for £10. Still have a DC01.
Like Jake, I would like one of these Hoovers but the has the priority as he asked first. They look DC03ish as they are wider than usual. Just a tad though.
