A few days ago Tommymilan graciously shared some Italian Hoover catalogs. Thanks again. Fred Stachnik asked that I scan the US line from a whole series of Hoover catalogs that he has left with me for scanning for the site. Fred, I think this is the one you are referring to. Let me know if it isn't. There are three binders here and most of them are single models. Anyway, these are fun and fun to compare to the Italian line. These would be from about 1978 as well since I had a Celebrity II Elite brand new. Wow! What a great vacuum.

I did not know there was a U.S. version

of the "Junior" upright --- I've never seen one until now. They're really cute!

I remember an American orange version of the Junior from the late seventies. They really were great cleaners. Notice that the cord hooks are on the opposite side from the ones on the Convertibles. Were they manufactured in England I wonder?
 
Fred...Thanks for posting the brochure from Hoover! I would like to find one of those light blue Slimline canisters as they were the last of the line. The Convertibles pictured were the first of the top fill models and the first ones to use the new square handles. Great Pics!

The "Junior" or apartment sized cleaner was model 1348 and ran until sometime in 1979. It was the last of this type of cleaner. The base was made in England and the bag and handle were made here to reduce costs. The first one the 1330 in garland green had all been built in England then imported here in around 1965. Starting in 1969, the brown model 1340 was built the same way as the 1348. I always found the tools difficult to connect, but it was easier to pull around once you got going. They were very decent cleaners and had the famous triple action beater bars. They were also very cheap sometimes on sale around $30 by the end of the run. I wish we had more variety than just those three models over the years especially since we did not get the headlight models.

Awesome brochure, I had a U6039 DAM for a while but it wasn't nearly as new-looking, ha! Interesting that the 1348 is still around, but no mention is made of the U1025 (harvest gold/butterscotch version like I have). I would have been almost certain it was mid or late-70's!

I'm drooling over ALL of those machines. Of course my dream machine is the S2037 two-motor Quik-Broom. What I would give for that one!
 
Austin...sorry...I forgot all about the little U1025! That was the last of the line by 1979 not the 1348. It is interesting that the green model is still shown in this brochure. I am not exactly sure when the U1025 came onto the market. All in all they were great little cleaners!

Really like that Hoover 1348-That would be a real competitor to the Oreck.Surprized those weren't more popular here.Maybe these should be reintroduced to compete against Oreck and other compact uprights-and yes with the metal chassis!and it can do something the Oreck and others can't be used with hand tools!
 
Wow, there were certainly a lot of variations of the Celebrity running all at once that particular year!

Wonderful scans, I love them. I really wish tha we had the Complete Celebrity series in Italy, with power nozzles and everything..only suction cleaners, what a pity. And also, I really miss the american power nozzles. I think that in Italy who had carpets preferred to use an upright. I knew a lot of people who had a complete hoover line, like convertible+ constellation+rug shampooer!
 
Junior Hoovers

Are great, unles you need to clean up heavy-ish debris, like cat litter or small stones. These tend to rattle between the agitator and fan chamber without getting picked up.

On the other hand, the suction with tools is better than on a full sized Convertible type, as the suction is sealed.

Bit cheeky of Hoover to mention the aluminium chassis though - the body of the cleaner (from 1964 onward, ie all US market machines) is plastic, and the 'chassis' is little more than a metal plate with an indent for the fan between the suction chamber and the motor!

I've always assumed that the Junior types were more unsuccessful in the US as it was too small for most homes there, just as some models were unpopular in the UK as they were too bulky for small homes - the Portables and Celebrities spring to mind.
 
I absolutely love the Dial-A-Matic U5015! I always thought the Persian Gold was more of a butterscotch color. I didn't realize the Floor-A-Matic was still being produced in 1978. It's too bad the Dial-A-Matic line didn't have a longer production run in this country. I believe 1980 was around the cutoff?

1978 was the last year for the DAMs.
1978 was the first year for the Concepts.
 
Ohio Tuec...the Hoover Floor A Matic was Hoover's best kept secret for many years. The Floor Mate is what eventually replaced it. It was in production from 1966 until very recently. It went through some name and color changes but that product saw very few serious changes in the 30+ years it was sold. The last ones were called "Floor Max" and they were black and chrome. The DAM officially went out of production in 1978 to make way for the new Concept series. However it took a few years for Hoover to sell off the excess stock.
