According to the VL Convertible list posted some time ago, the U4033 & U4039 are poppy red & oyster white; yet on other VL threads, they have orange hoods and orange & black houndstooth bag jackets.

I did find one VL photo of a poppy red hood that someone claimed was a U4039; both versions' headlight lenses are marked 'Deluxe'. The hood styles of all correspond with the VL list.

Is the Convertible List inaccurate, one of the photos misidentified, or is it an anomaly?

Awesome, John. Are there any Convertibles you have never owned? I wouldn't think so!

As for Tom Anderson, I've enjoyed reading his old VL threads. Between the two of you one can learn lots of things Hoover.

Maybe he can shed some light on the U4033 & U4039.

Another Version With Same Orange Design

This one is unidentified by a model number and wasn't on the aforementioned Convertibles List. It's non-deluxe with a full hood.

A Different Model in the Same Red Design

It's the U4147-002 non-deluxe sans headlight.

Mystery solved. The orange color of the U4033 & the U4039 is indeed called 'poppy'--the definition of which is reddish orange.

Hoover did use 'poppy red' for other cleaners such as the U6003-001 Dial-A-Matic, but the color of the U4147-002 and U4115 (pictured in my initial post as a U4039) is coded 'Light Red'.

In addition, the VL Convertible List also misidentified the color of the U4033 and U4039 as 'Poppy Red' instead of 'Poppy'.

Finally, the unidentified full hood Deluxe Convertible in Reply #3 is the U4061; nicknamed 'ketchup' as part of the 'Condiment Color Set'. The List also mistakenly labeled it 'poppy red'.

I get the error of the color misidentification as I've always thought of poppies as the primary red color rather than red-orange.

In rereading the thread with the unidentified U4115 the poster couldn't make out the model number. A responder noticed it had a round handle rather than the rectangular one of the U4115 so assumed it was another model altogether. In fact, it's a Frankenhoover with a handle & bale swap.

first 2 pics are correct. the 4039 and 4033 are poppy red which looks orangish. both share the same bag.
the other one with grey plaid bag is an entirely different color. it's more red and the grey plaid bag is correct for that model.

the other version with same bag is also another model with a different color but very close. also the houndstooth color on that one is slightly different as well.

I was going by a post by "hoover1060", who referred to the U4061's color as "poppy", and it seemed to me that the Dial-A-Matic U6003-001 - in poppy red - looks more red than it, the U4033, & the U4039.

The color code for the U4115 & U4147-002 is "Light Red". Hesco's schematics do not include the pages that list the hoods & their codes for the others.

Thanks for responding and also for all your work in compiling the VL Metal Base Convertibles List. I'm in the process of assembling one for the Plastic Base ones.
