Hoover Turbo Power1 U2332

The first step by which consumers in South Africa thought Hoover has gone to the dogs.

It is made of plastic, and no matter from which angle you look at it, it is plastic. This was a discussion I clearly remember amongst my uncles and aunts.

they had no confidence in this new way of doing things and having a domesticated market, ladies who are employed doing cleaning fetching kids from school. tea lady, laundry, it was found that vacuum cleaners had to be tough, and a saying arose that the domestic lady will even break a ball bearing should you give her half a chance. A plastic Vac had no chance, but unless you bought a Kirby your alternative was to follow the trend purchasing a new machine.

The Turbo power was a stepping stone in this part for more to come.

strangely the U2332 also turned out to be a Swedish green look alike.

I love the Turbopower's, despite the plastic. They really are fantastic carpet cleaners.

The U2332 is the vacuum my Mum had when I was first born. It didn't last very long, but that was due to user error and not the machine itself.

Incidentally, the Junior ran alongside the Turbopower for 6 years as the budget cleaner, so if one wanted the more traditional option, that was still there.

Thank you for your reply, yes despite the mould they were great.

featuring a new design brush roll at the time, it truly did what it was made for. in the 80's here in South-Africa the wave of longer piled carpets were big, and it had a great brushing of the fibres.

there was Kirby owners however the Carpet Fluffer was used once or twice after the purchase and that was it.

Life was not aaaaaaaaas rushed then and many people took great time and care of the appearance and hygiene of their homes without the technology of extraction deep cleaning, steam mops and and and.

There is no serial number on that Hoover, so unfortunately I can't date it. But I can confirm that the U2332 was from the second run of Turbopowers. New colour scheme and slight modifications, including bag full light and 2 speed motors. The U1220 ran as the BOL Junior and the U2336 ran as the TOL autoflex model. This lineup ran between 1986 and 1989.

I stand in adoration for your passion and history instituting accuracy.

Over the years I had quite a few Turbo Powers, to a rough estimation about 30 off them. The wine-red autoflex, and the Turbo Power Boast U 2796, also the total system, of which I still have a brand new set of accessories, awaiting the arrival of such a model in future.

You are a genius as far as the dating goes. I have given Gareth the Rose 652 De Luxe and at the time I sent someone in Britain an e-mail who confirmed the date for me. I have searched high and low for that e-mail since and could not find it.

With discussing this with Gareth-who has an impressive collection to be proud of- we both could not pin the exact date as you recognize it, however somewhere between 1958-1959.

Gareth and I are both collectors and live 1600 km apart hence tackle the vintage and classic machines from 2 different geographical areas, he in Cape Town, and myself from Johannesburg, Sandton.
