This is the first one of these I've seen up close. I'm guessing that it's like the Aero-Dyne?

Nice braided hose. However...the part you stick in the port has two metal tabs that are to hold the hose to the machine. They do not seem to do this very well. Any suggestions?

Interesting that it is a 418 - it is the equivalent of our 417, the first model, and I think a beatiful cleaner. In the UK production started in 1953 and it looks almost identical. It did have the Aerodyne style carpet nozzle though. In the UK it was the first model to have "pip & clip" fixings but on the LOWER side of the hose, wands etc. rather than the upper. Is yours the same? I find the end that attches to teh cleaner on mine is a bit loose too, but never managed to get it tightened - did not try too hard as I did not want to break it.
Here are the nozzles, these are not mine, although I have them too

Was the 418 built in Canada? Or, perhaps shipped from the UK? I could never understand how the Model 50 (or variant) continued in the US after this model was launched. It carried on for amost 20 years here. In the UK, in 1956 after the 822 was launched, the model was downgraded so no longer pip and clip, no aerodyne floor nozzle, no carrying handle under the front cover, no runner just moulded bumps in the case, and no "doors" over the blower outlet.
The picture shows most of the variants including the predecessor model 402 and successor 427 models - sorry for re-posting it so soon. I have just recently added another variant to my collection in two tone green (smoke pine& swedish green)

Yours seems to have an extened metal piece behind the switch for, as you have shown, winding the flex. This is in line with the Henry Dreyfus patent drawing - in the UK it was a U shaped wire piece which could be folded down.
You must be delighted to have this cleaner, about the only thing I dont like about mine is that the hose is a little short for my liking.

Well it states
that it is made in Hamilton, Ontario. It sure does have a "British" look to though. Did people use paper bags inside the cloth bag?
I'm going to have to look out for a carpet nozzle! Now I know what to look for.
As for the fittings, they are not pip and clip, just friction fit.

Very nice find. Yes it did have a rug nozzle (probably the same one shown with the 408 here) If memory serves it would have been out at about the same time as the 416 (next picture) so probably 1952-53.
Incidentally - The accessory kits shown with both these machines are not original. They are copies I've made myself. The original one from the 416 was falling apart and the one from the 408 was missing. Just shows what alot of work and time can do - lol
