For the longest time I really thought the Hoover self-propelled WindTunnel was complete junk. Really over the years the design really had a lot of value to it.
It's also the default line in my head of the minimum power of vacuum should have.
it's got incredibly way too many parts too manufacture, way too many parts to break. but somehow they kept production going for many years. It really was a marvel of engineering & production in it's time especially how cheap they were able to produce them.

Was wondering how many of you have one or more in your collection?

I have one

The blue anniversary one like you have pictured. They are not bad vacuums, my biggest gripe is it sounds like a BlackHawk Helicopter landing. It, however, does a very good job cleaning, grooming the carpet. and if it were my only vac I could get along with it. The consumables are still available and inexpensive. It is plastic and you do have to be careful with some points that seem vulnerable, but with exception to the high noise level, a good vacuum

I have one, it is an anniversary edition that was found on the side of the road complete with a broken belt and a full factory stock bag. These were as you said Harley, good cleaners, yes they are loud and another drawback for the self propelled models would be the weight. They are about as heavy as a Kirby. Although that self propel feature does make this extremely powerful machine rather easy to push and pull.

As a 15 year owner of this vacuum..

It's one of the best vacuums that I own, which I bought new and have had since '05. It is also my go to vacuum; it cleans great and one of the last good Hoovers made. Sadly, many parts for it have been discontinued. Mine still runs like a champ (taken great care of over the years) but the handle had to be replaced since a piece in it suddenly broke (top part) and became woobly.

I had to buy a used one but even that one has had quite a bit of use and seems like it might crack.. I'm not sure if investing any more money into it is the best thing to do anymore since I can't find new parts, but it's been one hell of a good vacuum. Super powerful: cleans and grooms carpet like nobody's business.
I never use the self propelled feature nor did the noise ever really bother me too much.

If I had the chance to go back in time, I would do it over again, without thinking twice. Every time I use it, it just feels right, and gets the job done quickly. I never use the self propelled feature, nor did the noise or weight of the machine ever bother me at all.

Yes, this was definitely a marvel of engineering and production. The design was tried, true and tested; no wonder why this model was produced for that many years. It was just that good......

Someday I hope to own one

Im fascinated with the old windtunnels. The are like a concept but without the stupid cord rewind. If used both and owned a Concept. The concepts cord rewind is such a pain to deal with. Its also heavy. Its dangerous to use some times. The brushroll is so aggressive that the cord had been shredded by the previous owner. Had to put tape on it. The windtunnel has none of that. Its so much easier and more fun to use. @S2 82, I never used the self propelled either. I thought it was too jerky. I had a nice friend who let me use theirs to clean their house whenever I came over. These really are a timeless example of how cheap and over-engineering can go together. Now if only Dyson and Miele could figure that out.

Psst, same with Tacony.

I have one in Green

I have one in green, purchased it back in 2011 from Sam's Club. Used a few times, gave it to my mom, she never used it, sat in a closet a few years. Too heavy for her. She needed closet space, so it came to my house and was put in the collection.

I never use it, too bulky, heavy, jerky and overall not a fan of uprights. I have a few uprights in my collection; Convertibles, Dial-A-Matic and a Kenmore Twin Fan.

It was an impulse buy based on the color and sale price at the time, haha

I really should sell it.

Bought my parents that dark green Ultra version which was top-rated by Consumer Reports - maybe about 20 years ago. It was a gift for their anniversary since Dad was doing all the vacuuming back then in their large condo apartment in Toronto. Then my brother convinced them to rip out all the acres of wall to wall broadloom - to my dismay - and replace it with cold hardwood floors. So I exchanged the Hoover for my Kenmore Elegance (Progressive) canister and I used it for a while. I loved that Hoover! One of the best carpet cleaners around.

I like them, but I don't own any. I've been looking for one of those blue Anniversary ones or the alien green colored one. I also like the earlier hunter green version.

It used to be, I saw Self Propelled Windtunnel in the trash a lot. But lately it's mostly bagless Bissells.

I have one, it was a Peddler's mall find for $25. The height adjuster broke but everything still works. It is identical to thevacuumman's second picture, a Mach 6.9 pre turbo brush.
