Alright, I need some more expert HOOVER help here! Last night, my daughter spotted my Hoover 2110 portable from the 60's and asked what was in the "suitcase?" I proceeded to get it out, open it up, put it all together and demonstrate it for her (if you remember from an earlier thread, she loves old Hoovers). Anyway to make a long story short, I hit the switch, it blew a big puff of dust out the exhaust so I quickly turned it off....now it won't come back on. I decided to take it apart figuring I either had a dead motor (worn brushes, etc.) and figured I could probably replace the motor if it was shot.....I got it apart and was floored by the motor in it. So now I'm looking for either replacement parts for the motor, new brushes, bearings, etc. So, does anyone know of anywhere to find said parts, or is there a suitable aftermarket motor that would fit this thing? The motor itself reminds me of an oversized soup can that vents into a rubber exhaust adapter on it... Strangest setup I've ever seen! Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to get this old girl back up and running so I could use her on a regular basis!! Thanks!

Hoover Portable--

--had the best ever 'place for everything and everything in its place' idea among several others brands. It also used the Dial-A-Matic motor along with the Slimline and later Swingette. Many units interchanged as with the Portable & Slimline using same lower body, etc.(Was this a definate motor problem?)If so parts machines should be easy to find.I almost have an organised Hoover section upstairs and will have several Portable/Slimline models later in the spring if needed.(Also need to have a Celebrity Clearance.)

Well, the good news is that it wasn't the motor after all, I took it back apart, unkinked the power cord coming into the unit and I am just about thinking its a short in the wiring. I hooked it up and it seems to run great and has awesome suction. So that's a huge relief. Now with that said, I certainly wouldn't mind a parts machine or two as I would really like to start using this vac on a more regular basis. Like you said, I'm completely impressed at how Hoover was able to store everything in such a neat package, or "suitcase" as my daughter calls it! Thanks again for the reply!

Portable

Glad it was not the motor. It rarely is unless abused(picking up liquid, breaking bag,etc.).The 60s were a great time for Hoover with DAM,Portable/Slimline,polishers that became shampooers and then picked up dirty water,Handivac broom/hand vacs and more. And to finish the decade--the first POWER DRIVE!
