I had my heart set on getting the new Hoover Windtunnel Air. So I went to Walmart to get it, and I got very angry. They had the display and everything, but no vacuum to buy. I asked someone if they had any in the back, thinking that it was sold out. She did her price gun thing, and said they have never ordered any and don't have any on order at all. So why would you display a vacuum but not order any? So we had to go to the next town over 15 minutes away anyway, so I checked that Walmart, they also did not have it, even though Hoover.com said they would. I checked Sears, and they did not have it. But something caught my eye at Sears. The Hoover Platinum Lightweight bagged. I have wanted one of these since they came out, but never wanted to pay the ridiculously high price for it. But they had them for just $230, and I could not resist. I could not wait to get it home and try it out. I tried it at the store and was very impressed though. First of all, it has the slow staring motor just like the Hoover Z400 and 700, which I absolutely LOVE. It has a big brushroll with stiff bristles as well. Really pulls itself. The light is also pretty bright, so it is easy to see the dust on the hardwood floors. I am really impressed with this machine. And I would definitely recommend it. The canister is also pretty nice to. Very lightweight and the floor tool is nice and soft. I am just hoping I can fit A bags in the upright and a reusable Portapower filter bag in the canister.

I've always liked those and hope to get one some day when more of them become "used".... they are still too new to be on Craig's List.... I told you to get the Platinum! Sorry you didn't get what you had your heart set on though!

Same story here. The Walmart way out in Benson had an Air on display, but no boxed machines available. I suspect corporate probably requires that the displays go up on a certain day, even if they don't have the actual items yet. Smart, eh? I've noticed that the Platinums are coming down in price everywhere. Maybe "TTI Hoover" smartened up about them being overpriced.

Downfalls?

Just curious but what are some of the downfalls? I've thought about buying one, but I think I'll wait until they start showing up used.

Interesting to note that this great performing carpet cleane

Just goes to show you, that a "fan-first" upright does not need a lot of amperage to get a carpet clean. It amazes me that this Hoover Platinum lightweight is one of the highest rated uprights in Consumer Reports in a field of over 30 other upright vacs, and yet it only uses a 5.5 amp motor. They should really market this as an energy-saver vac!

It is actually the only upright vac tested by Consumer Reports that rated "excellent" in carpet cleaning paired with a "very good" score in handling. Even the top-rated Miele uprights (Twist, Bolero and Jazz), which received an "excellent" in carpet cleaning all had only a "fair" score for handling. And by "handling," Consumer Reports means how easy it is to push, pull and carry.

The Hoover Platinum (like the classic Oreck and Riccar Supralite) are relics of the old "fan-first" configuration - which is nice to see because that allows you to have an energy-saving low-amp motor, and yet still clean carpets decently.

And as someone who prefers two vacs in his arsenal (a carpet-only upright, and a canister for everything else), I really think these bare bones lightweight uprights are a fine alternative to those bulky "bag-first" uprights (or bin-first bagless uprights) with those noisy 12-amp motors and complicated sets of on-board tools - which are often really useless for above-the-floor cleaning anyways. I mean, look at the problems people are having with the hoses on the Miele uprights.

Now if only TTI had thought of one more feature to clinch the status of this new Hoover upright: Why didn't they think of designing the pair of vacs so that you could securely store the little canister on top of the upright in a closet? This would save valuable floor space in a closet. Imagine a profile with some indentations that would allow you to store the canister on the hood of the upright, with a fold up hook on the upright's handle to hang up the hose. Both units could be wheeled out of the closet at one time, and separated with ease when you are ready to clean. That would have made the pair a really elegant duo.

Of the 12 excellent carpet cleaning uprights according to Consumer Reports, only the following 5 weigh under 21 lbs:

6. Hoover Tempo Widepath = 16 lbs
7. Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition Bagged = 18 lbs
11. Riccar Brilliance Premium = 20 lbs (still not the best at handling though)

So this means you CAN get an excellent carpet cleaner that is relatively light to carry and move around.

I imagine the heavier of these five have been weighed with all their on-board tools.

So far, the only downfall I can find so far is it is hard to push on deep shag carpets.

That's interesting Chase......I imagine if they had added a manual height control to raise the nozzle a bit, it might be easier to push on shag carpets. I wonder if any of the other "fan first lightweights" like Riccar or Oreck have manual "Rugulators" on them.....hmmmm.....

Anyhow - enjoy your new vac! I'm jealous!!!!

It depends on what Oreck I use on my carpet if you can push it easily or not. My newer black one is hard, but it is OK, better on the first speed, but my 9100 is a lot easier. As for the Riccar, I had a Supralite but took it back to the vac shop. It wasn't bad pushing it, neither easy or hard

I have to ask...

Are they being discontinued? I seen them at 2 of my wal-mart's for 230, and at Sears for the same. That usualy means the item will soon be discontinued. Don't tell me TTI is getting rid of what could be a good vacuum. Mabe they realized its a "reliable" vacuum designed to last at least the 6year warranty, and decided thats no money maker let make more 50 dollar 6 month vacs so they will have to buy buy buy lol.

Hella bump..

a musty old thread gets resurrected.
I just bought a used one of these for our small city apartment because my Hoover Clean & Light wasn't cutting it on the deep rug we have. But as mentioned here this Hoover wants to clamp down somewhat so it is a bit of a fight. That said it is not too much work because it's not too much rug area that is so thick.

The blue lighted power button is a nice touch, and the machine is fairly quiet.
But what has yet to be mentioned here is the bag docking system. Probably the best i have seen once you are familiar with it's function. The bag is sealable when removed and is held in place by turning a relatively sturdy feeling lever mechanism.

I brought it home on the subway last night, and gave it an apparently overdue maintenance and cleaning today.
