Hoover Platinum Lightweight upright

Hi,
Has anyone tried the Hoover W/T Platinum Upright? The one that comes with the small canister? I have read good and bad on Epioninons. What say you. the experts?thinking about buying one, but I don't need the little canister.It seems to have some problems, and customers are saying Hoover is not too good about holding up on the warrantee.

I have one but haven't used it very much, so I can't speak to its long-term durability.  While it's lightweight, I find it hard to push when it's on high speed.  Maybe it's my carpet type.  It is easier to use on low speed, but I think that is primarily for bare floor cleaning.  All that said, I think does a good job of cleaning.

I had one for a couple weeks. It was a good little vacuum. Definitely as good as or better than an Oreck at a similar price.

I bought mine for 45, used on Craig's List... Upright only, no companion canister. I LOVE it and smile every time I use it... seriously, I want to give it a hug each time. Motor sound is beautiful and it has great agitation... super power and very nimble. It blows most Orecks out of the water... I haven't tried some of the latest Orecks, so they may have improved since I last tried them. It is super easy to push on low pile carpet like what I have in my apartment, but it completely stops on shag (it digs in, and is impossible to push, and the brushroll bogs down considerably) so keep your carpet type in mind....

The carry handle is well balanced too! And, it doesn't leak dust from the gaskets in the handle like every Oreck I've ever seen does. Only two complaints... the handle release pedal is on the wrong side and the rubber grippy part inside the handle is peeling on mine, and that makes it extremely annoying to hold. Still, a great machine, and I don't miss having the canister at all.... No brushroll off for bare floors, but the low speed seems to work pretty well for bigger stuff... Just an all around pleasant, well designed machine!

According to Consumer Reports, this is an excellent deep carpet cleaner for the money. It performs as well as a similar Riccar/Simplicity but is quieter and less expensive. It definitely cleans carpets better than the more expensive Oreck. Hoover's website sells a cheaper version without the canister. If you only need a carpet cleaner, this "fan-first" upright seems like a winner!

I did a test of 4 lightweights a simplicity freedom, Hoover platinum, Oreck XL 21, and an XL. In a deep cleaning contest the results were
1. Simplicity Freedom/riccar supralite
2. Oreck XL-21 (gold and platinum have the same set up)
3. Oreck XL Ultra ( the cheaper orecks will be set up the same
4. Hoover Freedom.

Shortly after finishing the test the circuit board on the platinum gave out. I've seen two or three of them now with circuit board issues, the circuit board is a $70+ part. Another thing i didn't like about the platinum was that it's fan case and motor are in one piece if you were to suck up hard objects such as coins repeatedly you would break the fan and have to replace the whole fan/motor assembly as to where on the others the fan alone can be replaced.

I have one, as well.

It's not a daily driver,  but, it works very well.  I do HATE that the handle release is on the right side!!! They've always been on the left.  I can see people 'snapping them' because they'd expect the release to be on the left.


  The little "Portapower" wannabe is very loud, but strong. The tools look like they belong on a toy.


  I do like the LARGE hepa filter bag on the upright.  I've heard about electrical problems.  Thankfully, I've not experienced them.

I have a commercial porta power, that is ok. but the hose is way too short. I use a hose from a deceased DAM. It really loses suction as it fills, and is a mess to clean out. I use the cloth bag.

I stage homes and business places for the market part time. So, I am quite hard on vacs.( I work full time and part time too! I have no life.)

Handle Release

For those of us who are left-handed, the handle release is on the correct side!  A vacuum manufacturer finally got that one right! (no pun intended)

I AM left-handed

I hate that it on the 'other' side. Actually, I'm ambidextrous.  I'm double-jointed, too, but, that's another story.
