Hoover model 719 and Eureka 250a

Hi guys, I was searching marketplace recently and came across these two vacuums locally for $10 each. I went out to pick them up and the seller threw in some bags and belts for free. She said her husband used to love tinkering with them and she had a few others for sale as well.

The Eureka appears to be missing its headlamp lens, has a hairline crack in the hood and is missing its original bag. Does anyone have a good image of what the bag should look like?

The Hoover looks like it’s all there and original. I’d like to repair the original bag on the Hoover. It seems like it’s in okay shape aside from the zipper. I will post additional photos when I get around to cleaning them up. Thanks for looking![this post was last edited: 8/11/2023-19:54]

Hi Billy,

The S-250 was manufactured from October 1949 to March 1951, and the S-250-A from April 1951 to July 1955. Neither was advertised as a commercial type cleaner. I am unaware of the updates of the 250-A.

I've seen a photo or two on VL of one or both of them in the past but was unable to find them for you now.

Below is a 1950 ad that will provides an illustration of the S-250's bag. It was a similar color to the hood.

Thanks for posting that image Paul. After more searching I found another Eureka thread where member SpiritOf76 posted these. The fluted lens is a really cool design detail. I would really like to find one of these lenses if anyone out there has one that they would be willing to sell. I would like to restore this after I finish up the Royal. I found a nos vintage replacement bag in black that I was planning to swap for the red bag. I think it will be a better fit until I’m able to find or reproduce the original. I like the fluted design, also. Hope you are able to find an OEM replacement lens.

I wonder now if the difference between the S-250 and the S-250-A was that the former used a shake-out bag, and the latter was modified for the new disposable bags?

Thanks that’s interesting and seems like it would make sense. I picked up this NOS vintage aftermarket bag for now. Not original but at least it isn’t bright red!

As much as I love Eureka vacs, those Automatic upright heads have to be the scariest design in the history of vacuums! They all looked like angry monsters ready to gobble up anything in their path. The wide flat mouth and the brand plate nose combined with the headlight was sure to frighten any toddler, just as I was scared of our Super Automatic 260. The headlight frame really accentuated the angry face, with its heavy metal “unibrow”. And when the thing growled to life and the headlight pierced the darkness, I went running to my bedroom and slammed the door!!!

Please post a close-up photo of the S-255's ratings plate. I'm wondering if it has the same motor as the later Model 260.

So 350-watts at 115-volts equals 3.04-amps. The Model 260 2-speed was rated at 3.5-amps.

I wonder if Eureka used the same "pancake" motor as the 260 in the 2000 Series cleaners except for the the ESP 6-amp motor that debuted in 1978 (and other later more powerful motor options)?
