Since I haven't been on Vacuumland for a while, many of you may not know that for the past couple of years I have been very seriously downsizing my collection.

This is for a number of reasons ...

First, even after getting rid of a huge amount of stuff when I moved two years ago, my "workshop" garage is still stuffed so full of stuff that I can't even use it as a workshop -- so I can't work on any machines.

Second, I went through sheer hell when I moved from my former apartment of nearly 20 years to our new place. Moving is a migraine-inducing nightmare of stress and upheaval on any account; our move was made all the more so by having been in one place for so long and having so much stuff -- including way too many vacuum cleaners and accessories.

I did try to give a lot of sweeper stuff away but had a hard time attracting any takers, so a lot of really lovely old vacuum cleaners and many, many cartons of parts and accessories just got disposed of, I'm very sorry to say.

It's not that we plan on moving again anytime soon, but that I'd rather deal with this chore gradually than have to go through again what I went through last time. Arlee and I both nearly had emotional breakdowns. It was just sheer, absolute hell.

Third, my state of being in "perpetual impoverishment" doesn't seem to be letting up. It's a bitch being self employed in this economy, believe me. So whatever little bit of "mad money" I can raise on eBay is a great help.

And fourth, and perhaps most significantly, I recently lost a dear friend and fellow vacuum cleaner collector in Palm Springs who had a very large and very nice collection. Unfortunately, he apparently had not left a proper will (at least, that's according to those appointed to dispose of his collection).

It turned into a big, messy feeding frenzy involving other collectors, his partner, his family, and some of his friends who thought they saw a golden opportunity to make a killing selling his prized vintage machines.

This not the first time I've seen this happen but the third or forth time. It's very demoralizing for all involved, and I don't want anyone getting demoralized on my account. I'm not getting any younger, and the older I get and, presumably, am drawing nearer to that time when I will "shuffle off this mortal coil," I really don't want to leave a big burden on anyone's shoulders to have to deal with.

So, little by little, I'm trimming my collection down to just a dozen or so of my absolutely most favorite machines, and all the rest is going -- one way or another.

It's been fun having a large collection for the past 43 years, but in the past 4-5 years it's largely just become a burden.

eBay certainly has proven to be a successful venue for reducing my inventory, notwithstanding the huge cut that they take (as much as 10% of the final value, plus PayPal fees).

So, anywaaaaaaaaaay, my latest listing is a beautiful black Hoover Model 700 bag. Check it out! Bid early and often!! :)

Thanks.......

I couldn't have said it better

Hello Charles,Great bag! After reading the above I feel I am an east coast version of most all of what you are saying.I took 11 items to my EBay seller yesterday and have so far completed 2 today for next time.I also welcome anyone on a road trip to exchange a small amount of currency for a large amount of vacs. And I am more aware every day of location of dumpster and scrap metal yard.--"lost a dear friend-in Palm Springs"-Loss of any friend is terrible, but without being to nosy I wonder if it may be one I had met?--Palm Springs is one of the few places I would really, really like to see!I just got a second book on the work of architect A Frey who did the 60s service station that is now visitors center,R Loewy house and more.(It was actualy marked down to $3.00 at Books-A-Million so sometimes east coast poverty can allow a purchase.)-Best wishes,Jimmy

Hi Jimmy. My friend's name was Rick Wilson. He was one of the kindest and sweetest people I have ever known.

Palm Springs is a wonderful city, just full of stunning Populuxe and Mid-Century architecture. Here's a photo of the gas station / visitors' center you mentioned.
