Hi!

I just bought a Hoover Model 70, and I have a few questions for you:
1. Is there an easy way to neatly change its bottom-fill bag?
2. Can it be retrofitted to take a Eureka F&G Bag?
3. When was the Model 70 made?

The model 70 Hoover is a beautiful machine. Made in the 60's, it's a beautiful example. The bag is difficult to change without spilling dirt. I have found that if you turn the machine upside down, it can be accomplished without spilling any dirt. Our resident Hoover expert, John Gregory of Gregory's Sweeper Central vacuum shop in Scranton told me that secret. F & G bags are too large to fit into the original model 70's outer bag. One can easily google Gregory's Sweeper Central and ask John any questions you wish. He is an actual expert on Hoovers.

The model 70 in the picture below is Mine. John graciously helped me with it, and now it's gorgeous.

Our resident Hoover expert, John Gregory, informed me that the model 70 was the last convertible to use the large medallion. Leave it to John. He knows everything about Hoover. He is the “last word“ on Hoover.

I own two Hoover Convertibles; a model 70 and model 1030. I never tried an F&G bag in the 70 but do have an F&G bag in my 1030 and just leave the snaps open on the outer bag, seems to work fine. I agree the filter bag is a bit big but I ensure the folds are open and by leaving the outer snaps open, helps airflow.

The 1030 outer bag appears to be a bit smaller than the 70 outer bag but that could be my eyes, lol.

I did read on here, not sure who posted this but they said when you're ready to change a C bag, turn the cleaner off in the operating mode, that seems to help the dirt stay in the bag and not settle down if you were to turn off in the upright position, I need to try this. I will have to find the post, but know I read it on here.

I am a die hard canister guy so I have very few uprights in my collection, the two convertibles mentioned above, a dial-a-matic, and a windtunnel.

I will say I recently purchased my first ever Eureka ESP Upright from the early 80's and I am thoroughly impressed, moreso than the convertibles. oops did I just say that? but that's my opinion ofcourse. :)

Brian:
Years ago I was able to get hold of a quantity of Eureka type A bags. They are smaller F & G bags. Kirby would use them as well for their Janitronic and Super Sweep commercial machines. They are 1/3 more narrow than F & G bags, but are made the same. I find those work for the Hoover Convertibles when making a top fill bag without changing the bottom fill outer jacket. I see Eureka type A bags on eBay from time to time.

Which models were type A bags made for? Was this a predecessor to the F&G? Interestingly enough, I’ve seen yellow bags on eBay that are printed “Royal type A / Eureka F&G”. The bags looks to be more narrow than an F&G.

John

It was the bargin basement model, with a very narrow outer bag. No height adjustment. I'll have to check an old parts mailer from Eureka to see what the model series was.

Eureka type A bags

Fit the Hoover Convertible just fine. Top filling means better suction as it doesn't have to move yesterday's dirt out of the way to make room for today's dirt, like the type C bags do.

emptying the Hoover senior

over here in the Uk this machine is called the Senior .Mum still has hers from 1963 .To empty or change the paper bag she would simply unclip the bag from the handle them release it at the bottom by sliding the white catch to one side .turn the whole thing upside-down .Off with the full bag on with the new one zip up and put it back on the machine .What could be simpler
