Hey guys, I went to my local vac shop today, and I got this Hoover. It doesn't have the original bag on it (the bag is currently red), although it runs pretty smoothly. I would like to take a look inside of the machine, but I just can't figure out how to take the hood off. Im used to the old Eureka's/Sanitaire's, and Kenmore Twin Fans. Also, if someone has the converter that attaches to the end of the hose that goes with it, I am interested in buying one.(I don't need the hose or any of the attachments... Just the converter) If someone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Daniel :-)

That thar is a veeeeeery rare machine! You got pretty darned lucky to find it in decent condition like that!

There should be two flathead screws underneath that hold the hood on. Its been a while since I took my 63s hood off, but yours is slightly different too, so someone else might be able to help!

I had no idea that it was rare! I found out how to take the hood off, although I don't have the right screw driver to unscrew the two screws. They are smooth/flat on the surface and have jagged edges around the head. I would like to find one of those converters too.... not sure if thats going to be difficult or not, and possibly a new bag for it. The red one that is on it right now is not in the best shape, and it has a hole blown out the front of it.

Thanks!
Daniel :-)

Is there a way to get to the light bulb without removing the whole hood? Like can you pop the lens out? The light is burned out, and I want to replace it, but I can't get the hood off until I get the right tool to remove the screws.

Thanks,
Daniel :-)

Nope unfortunately. The headlight lens fits quite snugly in a grove in the hood. As far as headlight lenses go, its probably the best friction fit design. Convertible ones always seem to fall out easily when hood is off, and if hood is warped, it never fits right. I like the 63 style hood better because of that.

636

Any chance of a picture of the handle please?

I ask because iy appears that this machine might be like the Uk version (638) with a footswitch - see picture 2, the silver lever on the right of the picture. Also it looks like the flex (cord) going up the outside of the handle in the same manner as it does on the Junior models. Was this a Canadian made machine?

Hoover 636...

Your Hoover,636,is the same vac as the 634 US version which is a find here. They were a limited series produced at the end of the 63 line and the 64 Citation line.I believe, they wanted to use up that lines materials.Enjoy, they are a very nice machine. The bag's on the 634 took a dump out that took a "C" bag conversion, that had a bag clip on top.The entire machine was the same green color. It was a glamour machine.Enjoy...Michael

Thanks for all of the info Michael! Here are some pictures of the handle for you Al. I did notice that it does have a foot switch, and it has the cord running outside along the handle. I thought for sure it would be built into the handle, but apparently I was wrong. Also, if anyone has a bag that will fit this that they are selling, please let me know. Im looking for either a turquoise/green one, or a grey one.

Thanks!
Daniel :-)

Thats a Canadian model

The american model did not have the foot switch, nor did it have an exterior wrapped cord.

The bag originally was a bluish grey.

Here is an absolutely fabulous example from Fred's collection in Minneapolis.

Hoover model 636

Did these older models shift into high speed when the converter was inserted? Or was that a new feature on the Convertible? Was the suction about the same?

I believe they do not shift into high speed since it looks like there is nothing there like a switch of some sort to do this. I may be wrong, but it doesn't look like it to me.

Daniel :-)
