I have always wondered about attaching the bag to the Model 28 and earlier models. It has the two screw lug nuts to tighten the bag. Did the owner have to use pliers to tighten them each time they emptied the bag or was it sufficient to just tighten the nuts by hand.

Thanks for you input, just always wondered ....

I would think it could be finger tight because there is the strong chance of over tightening the screws with pliers.

I think if you were to use pliers, you'd break the bakelite. I was always under the impression you simply empty these machines out by sliding off the top clamp, and dump out the bag through the top, either onto pieces of newspaper spread out on the floor, or by taking the whole machine outside to the garbage can. That's what I used to do when using cloth-bag Hoovers anyway. You can get quite a workout lugging around a commercial 918 ;-)

I just

looked at all of my manuals for all of the "brown Hoovers" and also the black bag models that use the two screw method of fastening the bag to the exhaust. They all say hand tighten or finger tight. That is the word from Hoover.

the bag was made for easy removal to empty the dirt out, eg using your fingers to loosen or tighten the screws
