Big Bag!

Now that's the way I remember the bag on my mum's 612 when I was a kid. I have a 612 now, but somehow it's bag doesn't inflate in quite the same way ... that 28 is awesome

That is indeed a beautiful 28! The 28 will always have a special place in my heart since it was the machine that started my hobby 20 years ago. I bought it at a garage sale for $8.00, and it's been in my collection ever since. Finding one today with the celluloid light cover and the bakelite hood unscratched is somewhat of a rarity. They outsold the model 61 in about a 3:1 ratio, which is surprising, as you would think people would rather the convenience of the Handisacs. Does anyone know the price difference between the two cleaners? Also, did the 612 also offer disposable bags?

No - the first UK Hoovers to use disposable bags were the next generation of models: the Junior 1334, the De Luxe 638 (which came, at least initially, in shake-out and 'Disposall' bag options), the Constellation 822, and the Dustette 2614.

I have a magazine advertisement from

Christmas 1949 that listed the Model 28 at $74.95, the Model 61 at $94.95, and the Model 115 at $49.95. 95 bucks was a lot of money in 1949!

Thank you Scott, now I can wonder no more. $20.00 was a considerable difference in 1949. I do like the "flat top" appearance of the 61, and clearly, this was where Hoover was going with subsequent models, as the parts were similar. I believe towards the end of the production run, Hoover offered the disposable bag system as an upgrade for the 28. If the 61 was $20.00 more, I suppose the upgrade would have been maybe $5. or $10. I have a few 28's with later bojack outer bags that use disposable bags, but none that are factory original. Now, does anybody out there have a pre-war machine with the ultra-rare Hygienisac system?

Did Hoover model 28 use paper bags? I'm new to learning about these vintage machines and not sure.

so youre not going to get an answer from any of the people in this topic (except john long he's still here)

to answer your question. no the model 28 was a dump bag not unlike a kirby or royal of the same period. airway had patents on paper bags until the early 50's.

the first hoover upright to use paper bags was the model 63, in 1954. the model 60-62 used a "handi sac" which was a re-usable paper bag, "type "W" as it was known well after those models were discontinued, but those machines arent common and bags are even harder to find for them. the model 63 was the first hoover to use the very famous "c" bag usually associated with the hoover convertible thru the late 70s

There were also aftermarket bags that had Eureka F&G style bag fill tubes and bellows in them. I've got one of those that I swap the original bag in my 28 for whenever I want to use it.

For all the Hoover 28 and 61 buffs out there

Thought I'd share this. I remember seeing this commercial when I was a kid. Strange how Hoover shows the 61 right after the 28 in the evolution when they were offered at the same time. The 28 was my first ever vintage cleaner and I still have it 30 years later. I do like the look of the 61 flat top slightly more. I'd LOVE to find a model 60 Hoover Special dressed up as a 61. I've noticed some 61's have glass headlights, while others have plastic. I'm guessing the later ones were plastic?
