I agree with Charles. I bought mine all original with attachments for $40 and its in excellent condition. I don't think you will get 200 for something with a replaced cord. EBay it and start the bid at $15 you might be lucky enough to get 60 for it

Bobby, you need to spend some time on eBay and Craigslist. That way you can get a better idea what these machines are actually worth. If you'd like a hint, there's a guy out here in the L.A. area that's been trying to sell a really nice Hoover model 26 for about a year with no takers, and he's only asking thirty dollars for it. Bear in mind that the Los Angeles area is an enormous market with over 12 million residents, and even at thirty dollars no one wants it. I'd wish you luck getting your asking price, but I really hate the idea of some poor unsuspecting guy that simply doesn't know any better paying way too much for a model 28, so I'm not going to. But thanks for posting the pictures. It's always nice to see a machine from this period that's been well cared for.

Another thing to consider-these Hoovers were very common and being durable-they survive-it was like when I was at the Sew&Vac place my way-a person asked what an older Singer sewing machine was worth-The shop owner told him news he didn't want to hear-those were so common and survived-they weren't worth very much at all.So--as one person on here mentioned if a Hoover 26 didn't sell for $30 in his market-the $200 price is not going to get ANY bites!I bought mine for like $15.And remember-there are no "blue Books" on vac values out there!-sort of wish there was!Guess its that the sport of collecting vacuums is still pretty new-they weren't thought of as collectables a few years ago. Most folks bought them becuase they NEEDED it to clean their floors and home.

WELLLLLL

I suppose George can ask the price that he wants for it...the machine seems to be very well kept and decals on the bakelite hood are still great !
In the UK HOOVER SENIORS 652 ( your USA 65 CONVERTIBLE model ) can easily be sold for 100 to 200 pounds but sometimes go unsold for 10 pounds. So it depends from the market and from the moment; sometimes there are 6 of them for sale at the same time, and sometimes you don't find one for months.
It would be a great start for someone starting a vacuum cleaner collection, for example.
As far as shipping carton, attachment set & caddy, instruction manual....this is only an obsession ....these are absolutely not necessary items; If you don't have them it does not mean your cleaner is uncomplete ! They are only (recently)appreciated "extras" - which were often sold separetely - but unnecessary for the machine value. The machine itself is important, with its unique design, personal history, technical "new" features and improvements, materials, etc
Moreover, speaking of such vintage machines I think there is no pre-estabilished-market-price for such items, as each of them is in different conditions and is a different case. If the price is high for you, just don't buy it and keep looking for old ladies who will sell you their lifetime vacuum for 15 bucks !

The real luck is to find a machine which has not been "restored" yet by some unexperienced ( but also experienced ) collector because that's the best way to lower its value. That's the reason why I usually try not to buy from other collectors. These are of course personal opinions.

Paying 40 dollars for this vacuum cleaner is quite an insult to the machine itself and to anyone who collects vacuum cleaners. For getting such a ridiculous amount, I would better keep it and wait for someone who can understand its value.

Cheers !

This is probably my nicest looking old vacuum I have. I am going to see if I can get any better offers but if not its yours for $100.00

Hoover Model 28

I have one that is in near new condition. My mom always took good care of her stuff. Mom's 28 is in my collection and still running strong, all the tools are like new,,, It is one of my favorite vacs. It still is all original. Dan

How do you guys ...

... who use vacs like these as daily drivers, deal with the dust issue of the shake-out bags? Meaning, the increased dust output while vacuuming (those things aren't HEPA filters, after all).

And how do you keep the bags from getting smelly?

Very curious here.

Old Daily Drivers (Dust)

I use my 60 year old Kirby as my daily driver and it doesn't smell dusty to me but then again I'm not allergic to dust thank God..and if you empty it a couple times a month it doesn't get smelly.. Of course I do spray the shake out bag with Fabreeze once in awhile... Dan

If you want to use an HOOVER 28 for everyday vacuuming, I would suggest as follows :

1 - first and most important issue, to have the machine checked by an electrician who will have to put at least new cable on it ( the originals tend to melt or crumble after 70 years ) and make it earthed. The original cable can anyway be kept for the future re-assembling of the machine.

2 - a normal paper bag ( like the ones used for the HOOVER 65 ) can be fitted inside the original fabric bag and blocked screwing the flange, it is a very easy operation I've learned here on vacuumland. The paper bag should come out from the flange enough to be caught on all sides by the flange in such way there is no dust loss inside the main bag. In this was it wont be smelly etc ( exept in case you have wet dogs or cats in the house... ).

I have done it with a UK Hoover model 262 ( similar in shape, size and age to u.s.a. Hoover model 28 ) which was in very very sorry conditions ( I already have other 262s in much better conditions ) and had been repainted many times and many colors during its 75 years of life, had no original cord and no original bag. So I completely restored it, made a total strip down and repaint. Its a very elegant machine, very quiet and charming to use for carpet polishing. Here it is now :

When I used dump bag vacuums of any sort-emptied the bag after each use!!Then no problem.Don't store dust in a dump bag vacuum or dirt and dust in a dump bin bagless vac either. And use a good canister vac to vacuum the inside of the dump bag-thus keeping it efficient and reducing odors, and fly dust.
