As my GCSE results were fantastic (better than expected with 8 GCSEs Cs and above!) I treated myself to a new cleaner. It's a Hoover Jive handheld cleaner running 4.8V at 50W. It's in a purple-ish blue colour, but in person the bin looks more purple. It's great! I think the run time is 10 minutes and is re-chargeable with a nice small wall transformer (with a UK 3 Pin plug of course)

My First Hoover vacuum cleaner, and I'm VERY impressed!!!

Very useful these little vacs are, and I use mine in the Kitchen all the time to pick up crumbs etc from the worktops.


I picked up a nice Dustbuster from B&M the other week for just £25, and these are very good too. I don't have any other handhelds apart from Black and Decker models. I would like a Dyson DC35, with the DDM but cant justify the price though.

Indeed they are! Very handy indeed little handhelds. For 4.8 my Hoover Jive can pick up some pretty big particles (as long as they go through the nozzle), I was very surprised for such a small little thing.

Heard some good things about Black & Decker handhelds. Apparently can tackle a lot of different situations without breaking a sweat.

Here's another photo of my Jive with the box it came in, note that the nozzle on the front of the cleaner is retracted. It folds up for cleaning. Also comes with a dusting brush as well.

I wouldn't bother with a DC35 though. It is a great design but it's just not there yet! Needs a 30 minute run time really. I say if you want just an ordinary Dyson handheld go for DC34, cheaper as well. Not sure about a second hand DC16 though if that might be ok for you?

The DC16 seemed to suffer with battery failure, as I have seen many of them on EBay spares or repairs because the battery no longer held its charge. My old CV1205 Dustbuster suffered this fate as well, as one of the internal batteries started to leak when it was 6 years old - but it did get a lot of use.


I was looking at the DC34 in Tesco the same day I bought the Dustbuster above - they are better than the DC16 in that they have the Dyson Digital Motor fitted. It was about £150, and I was sorely tempted, but again, I cannot justify spending £150 on a hand vac, no matter how good it is. I just wish that Dyson would get more realistic with prices. If the DC34 was about £100, I would get one, as I am dying to try out the Digital motor.


For now though, the Dustbuster will suffice.


Did you not consider the Hoover Jovis, which has a rotating brushbar on it, and power display LEDs?

I did consider looking at the Hoover Jove series. This one above in particular as I have a cat. Although I don't like the look of the Jove cleaners, they look more like an iron than anything else! Seem quite bulky as well. So in the end I went for the Jive I the end, also prefer the name 'Jive' to 'Jove.'

I did see a Dyson DC34 for £100 on ebay on the Dyson outlet on there. It had been hardly used and cleaned up, pretty much brand new. I think It had free shipping and they had quite a few of em' but they've disappeared

Currently have two handhelds on there but not DC34s. Mainly DC30s and DC31s.

I know what you mean Steve I'd love a DC44 but wouldn't love paying for it!!!! Although I do think it is the best cordless for my needs, but the 18V Lithium-Ion Dustbuster Flexi looks very cool but that's expensive too! However I'm thinking if I just buy the assessories and use my little DC38 it's the next best thing for cleaning the cars.

Congrats! What did you do well in?

The Jive looks like a good one - I have the Jovis cordless. Hoover have also brought out a mains edition now, the SJ4000DB4. Comes with a turbo brush as standard.

I use the Henry for doing the car or any other dirty jobs. There are times when I cant be bothered to get the mains powered vacs out for small spillages , and love to just lift off the dustbuster from its charging pad, and the job's done in seconds. The DC34 is also great for this, and many people are now looking at the DC35 as a main vac as its got a long tube and rotating floorhead, especially those who want a very light and convenient vac.


There are many of these type of stick vacs now available and they are getting quite in vogue - like the Ergo-rapido, and other hand vacs built onto a stick with a floorhead on the end. They are not my cup of tea, as the suction is only as good as the hand vac can produce, and many of them use a direct filter which clogs quickly.


The G-Tech Air Ram is a very popular battery vac at present, but its only good for floors, as its just an electric sweeper, but the DC44 can do above floor cleaning as well as carpets, so its more versatile - I want one, yes of course I do, but again, its the cost. Air-Rams are not worth £200, and nor are the Dyson DC44 Handhelds worth the £270 price tag. When I see one going for a song I will get one, but until then, I cant justify the price.

Actually, as the owner of the original Ergorapido, it was a natural progression since Electrolux had already sold their mains powered "Superbroom" with a detachable dust buster attached and then produced a cordless one with a brush roll floor head. The Ergorapido original had two motors, one for brush roll performance and a brush roll on/off function. The biggest mistake they did in my opinion is fitting a rather silly rubber squeegee blade roller bar with combination "paint brush" bristles as opposed to the more expensive proper bristle brush rolls that now feature on the AEG badged models.

Still, the Ergorapido was very well made and it had a HEPA filter with a mesh cover over it - pretty much the same kind that the Hoover Jovis has, now.

The best handheld is the Electrolux Z61A its sold in Argos for £50 its fab! I miss mine tho, and also I saw a white DC30 in Currys once for £50!

I have the Electrolux Workzone and agree its brilliant but we have a Mini and a Citroen DS3 and I have to clean the entire car with the hose as the main powerhead is a bit too bulky for all the contours plus the leather seats might scuff with the main head

Iv got brand new dirt devil 105 with tools, dirt devil hardy I do use that tools don't have much suction.

Iv had dirt devil handy, dirt devil XL hoover brushvac ,and hoover Jovis with power brush

I used to have a Vax Gator but ended up using it 6 times as it was too heavy & ran out of charge too quickly. Ending up selling it for £20 which is what I paid for it.
