I have a Hoover Convertible U4423. The label on the base says it has a 5 amp motor. I bought it from a Smitty's store in Phoenix, AZ in 1986 when I was moving into my first apartment. It was on sale for about $80 and it came with the attachments for as a giveaway promotion.

Personally, I think it works well, but for a 26 year old machine, should I be doing stuff to enhance it's performance? I've only ever replaced belts, and changed bags. According to this unit's owner's manual, "The bearings are lubricated for the life of the motor."

Since it was so similar to a Decade 80, only cheaper and less stylish, were there tweaks under the hood that could be performed to maybe activate the a dual speed? About the only complaint I ever really had was that the suction from the attachments was weak, so I have a canister that I use to do creavising, that area 1" wide along walls, and furniture (couch creases). That's why I ask about the dual speed because if it could be turned on manually, I'd like to just use my Hoover.

For carpet cleaning-the "High" hose speed may spin the brushroll too fast-causing belt and possibly carpet wear. And for carpet cleaning on high speed-might overheat the motor.Continue using the canister vac as before.
