Hoover Floor Washer Question

So I recently got one of those weird floor washers and it's got an odd issue. The suction was weak and come to find out the water/air separator was plugged up with a bunch of mud like gunk. I cleaned it all out and after reassembly the suction was awesome. However, when I use it now the water It picks up goes into the collection bag but it also starts getting sucked into the exhaust and blown out. Then if I shut it off a bunch of water drains out of the separator and into the bag. It's like water is building up to a point then getting caught in the exhaust stream. Is anybody an expert on these things?

I have two and I've never actually tried them on water. I cleaned and serviced one, but still need to start on the other. It amazed me how this thing was constructed.

I may have to pull out the other one and start working on it to give you an answer.
