Hoover Decade found this morning

I was so excited when I saw this. It had just come off the truck at the thrift and hadn't been priced or even made it to the usually verboten "back room" so I quickly ran and asked how much "as is" and walked out smiling with my $20 Decade 80 with the bagless dust cup. Always wanted one of these. On top of that it had the original owners manual and even better the department store receipt stapled in the manual. It was purchased at the Eatons Dept store in Don Mills Ontario March 10, 1986 for a whopping $299.98. Only a few minor scuffs on the hood and it purrs. I only wished it had come with the attachment set. Has the two speed motor for when the attachments are connected.

Can you believe that before I hit this store I'd been over at Value Village and they had a great shape Kirby Heritage 84 but I decided not to take it because I already have one. Of course I may relent tomorrow and if it's still there go back and get that as well, groan.

Great find Pete. I always look in the backroom,last time I found My Kirby G3, The manager turned it on and said Pewuuueewwww it smells like a dog and priced it at 5.99

I'm glad they didn't give you a song and dance or the old "you can't buy it until we process it, it's the rules" like the one thrift store in West Palm Beach did me out of a record player years ago. You made a great buy on that.

There is a sticker on the handle that looks like a the Canadian maple leaf. Maybe it's a Canadian version...

It's the Made in Canada Maple Leaf sticker on the handle. T'was made at the Hoover factory in Burlington Ontario not far from the store in which it was eventually sold at near Toronto.

Probably the same method as our Hoover Senior "Powerplus with Dirtcup".

Mike, it just filters in the bag and then the dirt drops down into the cup. Per the instructions when the cup is near full you unclip the bag from near the handgrip and shake it so stuff clinging to the bag interior is dislodged down into the cup. Every once in awhile you're to sort of push the bag inside out into the cup to really dislodge it? Anyways I can tell you that if you tap the bag as it is now you do get clouds of dust, I'm going to have to vacuum out that bag

wow, the bag is on backwards. the printing always faces forward on the US machines.

ya know Pete, that bag will really brighten up if you decide to wash it. its not too hard to remove from the frame, just requires a blunt prying tool (like a flat blade screwdriver) and patience!

i had a machine nearly identical to yours, from Goodwill. the sticker on the front is usually scratched and mutilated beyond recognition. yours looks flawless.

you may also consider replacing the gasket in the dirt cup frame. the quality of these gaskets is cheap and sorry. you can get the gasket from Hoover or use soft foam weatherstripping.

Boy there's sharp eyes out there.. LOL I never even noticed the bag was on backwards. I will eventually get around to removing it from the frame and giving it an easy wash in the sink to get rid of all that imbedded dirt.
I never thought these dust cup models were sold for residential use, the only ones I remember seeing were the orange commercial models.

You are so lucky to find that. i have been looking for one for ever and can't seem to find them in our area. Looks great. Are you sure that the 2 speed is for the attachments, I thought it had a two speed power switch like the 2 speed concepts and the PowerMax, that has the regular speed and the high speed for extra dirty areas.Anyway, that is a beautiful vac I love the colors.

I wonder if it's as rare as the UK Dustcup Powerplus? The idea is great, but the cloth bag section looks like it suffers the same problems as cloth filter bags in terms of messiness!

Wish we'd had the Decade 80 over here - they do have a certain glamour the Powerplus could have done with...

Looking at it, it is very similar to the UK Dustcup Powerplus, which was introduced in 1984 - the bag assembly looks identical, even down to the logo on the cloth bag section - that's the British machine below.

Sam, yup the two speed is only when the attachments are connected and the handle in the upright position. When I first saw it I thought same thing, same handle as the concept two speed but no two speed switch

Does look much the same Simon,,handle is slightly different, mines square chrome, that looks like painted metal or possibly plastic? Cord hooks on opposite sides. I'll be they just imported certain parts like the actual bag and holder accoutrements from one factory somewhere and sent them to all the plants worldwide

This is maddening. Am I wrong? Why cut it open and unpack the box? Also sometimes I have a feeling people that give away unused appliances chuck out the box and papers, and haul it to the thrift store. Who would want them old papers n boxes?
