I wonder what it ended at? It was up to $354.00 yesterday with 2 hours left. I wanted it but could not pay that price for it.Hope someone who will appreciate it won

It ended at.....

$445.00

Not as much as I would have thought TBH.

Given a choice between that and a Dyson for around the same price theres not much contest really lol.....

Hello to all! This is my first post. My name is Gary.

My yellow Eureka Bagless vacuum quit working yesterday so I was forced to go up into the attic storage and dig out my mom's old green Hoover Decade 80 vacuum. After cleaning the dust off it appeared to have not been used very much and seemed to be in good overall condition with all it's accessories.

I went to WalMart and bought 3 of the better grade Arm and Hammer type A bags but couldn't find the right belt. I installed a bag and it seems to run fine with just a little vibration from the old belt.

I went on eBay to search for belts and just about fell out of my chair when I saw this auction in completed listings. Mine is exactly like it (#U4381-030) but not NIB. Is the high price only because it is new or is this a rare model etc...just curious, I'm planning to use it....

I read and reread your posts and I don't understand...Is this Hoover comparable to the Dyson??

Any tips, suggestions or warnings on maintenance, bag brands etc. I would have greased the roller's bearings but It didn't look like the roller came apart easily (are they sealed bearings?). I have 2 belts on order already. Are original parts available for this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks, Gary

Is this Hoover comparable to the Dyson??

Gary,
The answer to that would be NO, the Hoover is light years better than the Dyson, and will last many years longer.
The Decade 80 is a variation on the Hoover Convertible, one of the best vacuums ever made. Your model dates from the middle 80's, and was the top of the Convertible line in its day.
Yes there are bearings in the roller to be greased. Easy job. Parts should be readily available too, either from any vac shop, or through ebay.
Enjoy the Hoover, thats an awesome machine!

That's great to hear! I was seriously considering buying a Dy$on before I found the Decade 80....Why don't they just make these again? They sure are simpler and it should be way cheaper to run without all the extra filters and expensive bags to change. Walmart even has generic Type A bags on sale for $.97 ea.

Are there any WWW links that describe roller disassembly and lubing? What type of lube is recommended.
Thanks again, Gary

I just meant that the Guardsman was based on the convertible. Just like the Decade 80. The Conquest is a total different design.
Anyways a Guardsman is way better than a Dyson.
Nicholas

Yeah, the conquest is way far from being a Decade 80. Its not in the same design family as the Decade 80. The motor orientation is like that of a Elite or Concept.

The commerical upright that Nicholas linked to is about as close to the classic Hoover upright design as you can get these days. It's evolution can be traced back as far as the Model 0. Its the last of its kind in the Hoover model line, unless something has changed recently.

Now, a few months ago it seemed that Hoover had a commercial cleaner that used the Decade 80 motor hood or one very similar. Its not there anymore, unless I missed it.

Sorry guys!

I was kinda asleep last night. The guardsmans in the links above do look alot like convertibles. I only glanced at the picture. Sorry my ignorance got in the way.

Many thanks for all help and input. I replaced 2 light bulbs, the roller's 2 bearings, the Belt, and the Fan Blade. It now works like new.

The local Hoover dealer could not believe I was "wasting" money fixing such an obsolete machine....

i have two of these, a commercial model and a special "Supremacy " version. these are best at getting LOTS of dirt out of carpet without hard sweeping/scrubbing. its lightweight, attractively styled and easy to use. the twin lamps are wonderful under beds and in dark areas. the daily runner at moms, the Supremacy, is getting lots of dirt the previous Oreck xl left buried.

that vac shop guy likely prefers to sell new machines rather than parts.
