Hoover Decade 80--A Dream Realized.

Two days ago, I found a lovely Decade 80 in the Fort Pierce Goodwill, for $6.99. Didn't buy it because I'm overrun now with uprights and no space until the roommate and her posessions move out. So today, I was determined to buy it if it was still there. Lucky me, I got it for a total of $5.59 because I'm elderly now. Unfortunately, haven't tried it yet. It's basically solid with light scarring and a film of dust. The two stick on decals on the handle are trying to peel off. I'm just so glad I got it before somebody else did.

I always loved these and the Decade 800 series. Seemed more like a modern day model 65 Convertible than some of the actual late model Convertibles did.

Congratulations Alan. Great vacuum and the cheery minty fresh color has always been a favorite of mine. Glad you decided you could find room for it at home before, you're right, it would be gone.

The same store had the lime green Convertible with the matching houndstooth bag, I let it get away. I think the store dumpstered it when they filled up the bag. Not very clever people that work in these places.

I regret letting my 2 green ones go.I also had a blue 800 with a matching cloth outter bag that my aunt used the hell out of. it still ran strong but it looked horrid so it became a parts vac=(.
Anywho enjoy your new Decade 80.It looks almost new in the pic withe exception of the peeling sticker.

I was wondering who here has the other Decade 80s. Glad you like yours Terry, it's such an elegant looking vac, even with the candy color.

I have two "parts" vacs, one is an Elite, the other is some fancy maroon Hoover upright with the cord cut off. It has a new bag in it, so I'm wondering what might have caused those people to chuck it out. It's the only salvage machine I have, due to space problems.

Looks good Alan. Does it have beater bars, or just brushes on the roller? Is it a two speed motor?

This has beater bars with the red nylon brushes and Power Surge. Also a wonderful long cord.

I had been wanted a Decade 80 for a very long time, until I noticed one on ebay that was "rebuilt". I got it for a steal of a whole 20 dollars. This was over the summer. It is definitely a favorite of mine, because it has the long cord, air freshner, and the power surge. Definitely the "Cadillac" of the 1980's Hoovers besides the Concepts in my opinion.

Yes, you're right. I would like to find some air freshener that would be compatible with the recepticle too. I think I have three Concepts, two for certain.

I think sears still sells airfreshener tablets Alan. Oreck does to but I think they are expensive.
I used to cut the pad of an air-wick stic-up but I don't think there are around anymore., Id try the Renuzit(?) crystal refills and put a few in to see if they stay in mabe?

Do tell,Im not aware,other than the Rainbow scents. Also the Yankee candle oils,a few drops on a cotton ball works to but doesn't last to long as it evaporatetes quickly.

Scents...

Kirby has 4 of them.

Three are in drops: Vanilla, Cinnamon Spice & All Purpose (I call it hospital smell [[ LOL ]], kind of like an antiseptic smell I guess.) And then there are the Lemon tablets.

I have customers buy all of them regularly for use with, trash cans, foul shoe smells, in the car, etc. [[ as well as for use with their vacuums ]].

Kirby has had a 'scent' available back to at least 1950.

As far as air fresheners, Electrolux sells "stink chips". I can't think of the real name, when I sold the machines, we just called them "stink chips". They are kitty litter dipped in some kind of scent. I don't know how well they would work with the type of fan system on a Hoover, but they last a pretty long time in clean-air systems.

Thanks Rick, I found something in Albertson's a few months back, but I couldn't find anything that smelled good. And no, you can't beat those discounts! It's a late Christmas present to myself.

Electrolux Chips

The "stink chips" that Electrolux sells are called "Clean Sweep". They have a lemon sent to them and do last a very long time. As stated above, Im not sure how well they would work in a direct air machine but they do last a long time in an Electrolux tank.
