Hoover Dail A Matic Day

Here is the bag I am using. It seems to fit the tube tight.
I am just picking the dirt off the rug and throwing it back in the room.
More concerned that it will damage the motor.
Any suggestions?

the bottom plate (which is all metal) still says:

The Hoover Cleaner
Made in North Canton, Ohio

The Hoover makes rug last longer

"It beats,as it sweeps,as it cleans"

It has the old Hoover sound and a FAR cry from the piece of junk I got when I bought the new Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Upright.

I am not sure but the Hoover bag seems to fit tight on the tube. No way I could use this on a weekly basis. I am just blowing dust everywhere and then chasing the dust the next day as it settles on everything.
I don't remember this happening years ago. This machine belonged to my parents.
My main concern is to NOT damage the motor.
Maybe I have gotten too used to the Rainbow, with no dust leaking and this is pretty old machine, but what a good example of proud Hoover products!

Rob -

I wouldn't worry too much about damaging the motor on that. They're workhorses!  If you are worried about it, bring the DAM to Minneapolis sometime, I'd be happy to rebuild it for you!

I've said this in other threads; there's a great way to "bojack" better filtration into these older machines...

I took a HEPA typy Y bag, and carefully tore the cardboard collar off. Then I took a type D bag, and carefully tore that cardboard collar off. I used some fabric glue and glued the type D collar to the type Y bag. I let it sit under a book or something heavy overnight, to be sure it cures... I am then able to fit the Y bag into the Dial A Matic, and now have HEPA filtration in my Dial A Matic. I've done this with a few other machines as well, and I usually do a few bags at a time if I'm going to expend the effort.

Fred,
That is a great idea. I will give that a try. Just didn't want to ruin the old girl. I even found mom's tool set for the machine. Great to see the metal agitator and those metal beater bars with soft brushes.

Dan,
Now don't be silly, this is a vintage machine. I have not swept for several days and what use it is to pick it up and redistribute it all over the room again? I have a cocker spaniel and I can be sure dirt gets tracked in the house EVERY day.
My main concern is that I don't damage my vintage machine that is 42 years old and it still works perfect. It was really something when they brought out the Dail A Matic.

What you have there is truly a beauty indeed! I've never seen a DAM with a pristine base like that, much less one with powerdrive. The powerdrive models especially tended to get scratched from the herky-jerky action of the transmission. Can I ask what model number that is?

Hershel,
I had to go look on the machine. It is model #1176. Parents bought it new back in 1972 and it was bought from a Hoover dealer.
As Dan said on his thread, I think people used to take better care of an appliance years ago, not expecting to replace it every year at a discount store with another cheap ,plastic, made in China junky vacuum.
This s ONE heavy sweeper but it runs so smooth.
I have the original sales slip and I think it CAME with the tool set.

John,
I know you are right and I know for a fact it did NOT used to do this as over the years I would borrow it once in a while and always changed the bag BEFORE returning it and I don't remember that red filter at the bottom ever collecting dirt on top.
I know we have talked about this before. It is just a mystery to me.
I still think I may just have a bad batch of bags.
I thank you guys for the suggestions.

Bag door cover

Was the bag door cover originally yellow like that, or is it sun-yellowed over time? If it's sun-yellowed, there's something called Retr0Bright that can remove the yellowing and return it to its original color. Google that name, it can be made at home if need be.
