Drilling out rivets while they turn and turn.......

MADDENING ! Having them finally loosen and come out....... PRICELESS ! Very lightly sanded the commutator and leads as well. Cleaned out the armature and field iron with compressed air. ( Waiting on the new field iron bolts to change to the sealed bearing housing. Going to save the four hole bearing housing as well ).

Agitator came out nice.

After a hot sanitizing and a light spray of rust preventative paint on the inside and on the agitator shaft, I replaced the brushes, thrust washers, bearings and thread guards. The newer bearings with their own delrin washers are a nice upgrade and the whole unit turns fluidly. There are right hand and left had helix brushes with these beater bar agitators and you have to order accordingly. Just an FYI.

Had to order a 9mm bearing.

After drilling out the rivets on the field iron and new lower motor housing to change out the 8mm bearing for a 9mm x 22mm x 7mm bearing, I was able to convert to a lower sealed bearing.

Thank you Joel !

It was a lot of work. It meant a lot to restore a Convertible like one I grew up with and have so much respect for. Love a Hoover Convertible !

That is One Beautiful Restoration!

Good job.  And thanks for all the detailed instructions and step-through.  The beauty of Hoovers of that era (and KitchenAid dishwashers for that matter) was that even if you bought a lower-end model, you still got the quality and basic mechanics that made the brand what it was.  In other words, buying up bought more bells and whistles.  Not any change in quality or performance.  Congratulations!

As you can probably tell, I am going through a renewed interest of Hoover Convertibles.  Was just down in the basement running the 69.   Those a great machines.

I agree Fred. And thank you.

The quality is very apparent as you work on these. I really enjoyed working with this beautiful machine.

Great restoration

I am amazed at what you did to that Convertible! I have seen a lot of restorations on Vaccumland, but this, really cool. The body, the motor, and the modifications are all top of the line.
I will be starting on a restoration of a Hoover model #29, and I'm going to use your pictures and explanations for a guide. -Jim

Lets see a pic of the bootom restored and assembled please

Fantastic job. Been doint this long enough now to know how important condition is to these old vacs. Getting one set up just right, like this one, is really satisfying to see. I tend to save basket cases from oblivion and make them fully functional again...trying to get over that and start with something in better condition.
Also you seem to be stressing quality over quantity which i am learning the virtues of as well.
Thanks for posting.
