Hoover Convertible Upright

I was looking at my Hoover Convertible Upright, and was wondering where the hose attaches in order to use the attachments. I remember on the Eureka Uprights a piece goes over the beater bar to use the attachments.

the hose attaches........

the hose is connected to a rectangle plate which slides into the rectangle slot on the base of the cleaner next to the back wheels- this leads direct to the fan compartment.

this was alwyas one mystery I could never figure out as a child. I knew Seniors had hoses but both my grandparents Seniors didnt have them.

The UK version which was not called a Convertible but was the "Senior"

Here is the UK Hoover Junior and Senior set I have in Mandarin Blue. both early 1970's machines.

I've always wondered this. What is the red nob on the right side of the base on the U.K. senior that we did not have on the U.S. Convertible?

the switch

ours is , of course, on the handle. ONE of things I dislike on the "new" ones... the switch halfway down the machine. NOT an improvement

Apart from the U4003 US import all our post 1950 Seniors (and proper as opposed to Turbopower Juniors) were fitted with foot operated switches. In my opinion its the most obvious difference there is between UK and US machines, another obvious one being our versions have the cord hooks on the right when looking from the front and the HOOVER runs down the left of the bag.

Regarding the tools if your Convertible dosent have the rectangular channel for the converter they attach with a pan converter that fits over the brush roll opening. I believe US machines changed in 1977 a couple of years before ours did.

You have to wonder why, back then, when the machines were so similar other than the name and the electric current, why they put a switch on the base on U.K. and on the handle on U.S.

As you point out our mains voltage is over twice the US norm.

It may be that Hoover UK found it easier to get the cleaners to comply with British safety standards by not having electrics in the handle. In our post 1950 cleaners that do have the handle switch(Convertible/Dial A Matics, Commercial 9 series cleaners etc) the switch assembly is different from the US version in that the switch is mounted on a plastic casting that provides a further shield from the metal handle. The version of the U4003 that we had is fitted with this switch and in addition the cable running through the handle is encased in an extra insulating sleeve.

P.s It may be for the same reason that our cleaners have always had handle grips- the first time I used a US machine (Model 1010)it felt very odd lol.

A friend borrowed the Hoover, but I will check it out once I get it back. Is it the same for for the plastic body convertibles?
