Hoover Convertible Sparking Carbon Brushes

What causes this? Is it normal? I'm seeing some flashing sparks coming from both carbon brushes on my convertible.

Yes that is normal

Thanks! I wasn't sure. I saw two almost constant flashes inside the motor and was afraid something was going wrong with it.

That is just the brushes making contact with the commutator, every brushed motor does this

yes its normal. your not alone lol before i knew (years ago) i was worried.
As electroluxxxx said its just the brushes coming in contact

What does it mean if the carbon brushes emit a clicking noise/whine when running? Does every vacuum use a different carbon brush or are they all interchangeable?

A lot of machines use carbon brushes, some of which are interchangeable however no not all machines are interchangeable different models use different components, and yes it is normal to hear a clicking/whine on power down and sometimes during operation. For example the hoover model 61 has a slight brush whine when in operation.
