i was using vice grips to hold the part of the armature shaft that the top bearing sits on and now there is a nick in the shaft and the motor will not run with out locking up.

What Do I Do!!!!

You're probably going to have to replace the armature unfortunately. I once did a similar thing by making the mistake of using pliers to hold the shaft so I could unscrew the cooling fan. The motor still ran but sounded horrible.

Yes, if the rear of the armature is scarred, scraped, nicked or whatever than its now a paper weight. That style of bearing (sleeve bearing) is very delicate and picky. the surface of the shaft has to be clean and smooth, no abrasions, properly oiled as well. Also if you ran the machine with the shaft like that then unfortunately the bearing itself is most likely done. If the top bearing has slop to it then I wouldn't reuse it.

Now if you decide to locate the replacement parts, you will want to use a 3 in 1 oil or a 20-30wt. detergent free oil to lube it up. Many people think those style bearings take grease (I did at one time too ) because of the way there set up but that is a BIG no no. It will massacre itself quite quickly and become rendered useless. I found this out the hard way with an old Kirby brush roll back in the day.

the 3in1 oil you would want to use has a blue label, not the black label of the regular oil.
