Just as the convention started, Marty Rocha sent me a wonderfully preserved Convertible 1010. I'd asked him to try and find me a "square hood" convertible and this is it! It works great, but I've got questions:
The bottom plate states that it has 2 speeds-it doesn't. Was it really made as a one speed? The serial number is 0058060.
Can either Tom or Jeff tell me the age, where in the series run this machine is and the color names.
Would most appreciate it!

Greg...

The 1010 was first produced in 1967 and it ran in production until late 1968. It was Spring Green and Seal Griege deep. It should be a two speed machine. Hoover did not make a one speed Convertible until 1972. Usually vac shops did not hook up the two speed feature if it came in for a rebuild. The switch is a plastic "stick" in the converter track. Maybe the "stick" is just missing, another common phenomenon. Photos????

What i learned this year at the Hoover clinic was that the speed switch was moved around. I know when we talked the other day you said there was no switch. Check to the other side of the converter track. But it is gorgeous isn't it?

My convertible 1010

Oopps! The "stick" is on the other-side. Different for me from early Convertibles that had the speed switch under the label. Now if I only had the deluxe attachment set...!

speed switch

The Convertible speed switch was moved from under the casting on the left side of the track to the right rear corner of the motor in October 1964.
Models that you'll find with either type of switch would be 34, 69, 334 and 584, and some of the first Penncrest Cleaners.

The Speed Switch..

Hey Guys

This is one of the myriad of differences when you compare UK and US Hoovers.

The 652 in the UK was a single speed machine and only 375w at that(actually 350w is more accurate- 25w was added for the Dirtsearcher lamp!).

The succeding 652A and every model of Senior /Convertible up to and including the U4014(with the exception of the US made U4003 and U4147) had the speed switch on the converter track.
