Hoover Convertible 1070 and 1076

Being in a "Hooverless" home situation as the bearing is going out on my Dail-A-Matic, I was thinking of seeking out a Convertible.
Other than such obvious quality changes over the Convertible's long run, Why do many of the Hoover experts seem to to favor the model 1070 and 1076 Convertibles?
I can easily see many of the "cosmetic" changes over the long run like:
(1) removing the hand grip
(2) using generic looking white cord sets
(3) using cheaper 1/2 furniture guards
(4) going to all plastic bases
(5) cheaper name plates
(6)change from metal to plastic bottom plate
(7) removing the beater bars
(8) going to two piece handle
(9) removing the famous Hoover BEAT AS IT, AS IT SWEEPS, AS IT CLEANS from the bottom plate.
(10) going from Hoover flip switch to slide on/off control
(11) slide on automatic attachment converter to manual front load converter
(12) separate hose and converter to one piece set
(13) plastic storage bag from tool caddy with attachment uses printed on the side
(14) shorter attachment hose
(15) changing from the original designer hood to the later more boxy
design
(16)going from bottom fill to type a C bag to top fill system

So why is the 1060 and 1076 favored? Thanks


What would be the preference of the models 1070 or 1076 over a model 69 for example?
 
This is the only Convertible I really like. The 584. I have enough genuine bags that I can change the bag after each use and put in a clean one for the rest of my life.

Thanks Tom. But what makes your choice a "better" choice? From my untrained eye, all Convertibles look alike except for the changes I noted over the years.
It seems from old posts several collectors talk about the 1070 and 1076 being the BEST of the Convertibles. If that is true,is it just a color or trim preference or is there a real performance reason. I can understand it just being a color preference too.

On just that basis I know for me I have no interest in the plastic base machines or the latter ones that had the front hose conversion and no interest in any Hoover without their famous beater bars. If truth be told I think I prefer the original "modern" design of the hood when they were first introduced.

Of course what I am looking for is what reason would the 1070 or 1076 clean better?
What started my interest is when my Dail-A-Matic's bearing got loud, I stopped using it until she can be repaired, so I am "HOOVERLESS"". There is a very nice Convertible that I am interested in right now for sale.

I would imagine that the later Convertibles with the newer top-fill bags would have had better airflow and thus performed better than the earlier models with the bottom-fill bags. Easier to change as well.

Thanks for the tip. Not sure if the 1070 and 1076 have a top fill bag.
I do know when I was advised which hepa bag to use in my Hoover Dail-A-Matic, it made a big difference in the dust escaping and improved the airflow for the tools too. To be fair to Hoover, this machine is using 50 year old technology with old one layer paper bags. Thanks again for your tip.
 
Well, this might help a bit.

Neither the 1070 nor the 1076 is a top fill bag. They can easily be MADE top fill. They BOTH have 4 position rug height adjustments, metal base, beater bar, big headlight, full bumper, 2 speed motor. The 1076 would have "channels" on the metal baseplate, "allowing more suction"... didn't really. The marine blue (1070) and Ceylon yellow(1076) were very popular colors during production of these late 1960s early 70s time frame. One issue was that the headlight lens would tend to shrink a bit. That was remedied on later models.Tool suction is ok (how much suction does one need... how dirty is one's house?). But the "tufflex hose and attachments are excellent.
Hoover went on to use Ceylon yellow across the line: polisher, Handivac, Constellation, etc...............
They are "must haves" if you collect all things "Hoover".

The model 69


(Neptune Green), was the first to say "Convertible" on the lens, the first to have a white handle (cost reduction),etc. The model 70 is virtually identical except for the colored parts. UNTIL the Hoover badge went to the smaller, sunken one. After the change to 4 height adjustment, front conversion, Top fill bag, Decade 80, later 800, the Convertible is what made Hoover a FORTUNE! It would eventually be replaced on the market by Elite. I was told, by Hoover execs that Hoover couldn't make them fast enough. They were lighter, onboard tools, FEWER parts, thus cheaper, etc.
But a good Convertible is just fine, whether it's Neptune Green, Delft Blue, Fawn brown, Garland Green (either the model 66 or the stripped down, more economical model in later years (no light, no handle grip, shorter cord, etc..................all of them are"fine appliances".

Thanks for the information. that is exactly what I was wanting to know.
I really am ok with the bottom fill as I never leave dirt in the machine.
I am ok also with the dusting tool suction, as you said, how dirty can someone's house be-well I could tell some stories here but I won't!

I think I will put in a bid in for the Convertible and see what happens. I was just so happy with my family Dail-A-Matic after I was advised about the hepa bags and then the poor old girl started having some bearing issues after 48 years of service.
One of our kind members has offered to help me out to get her back in service.
When you have had a appliance that may years, it is almost like a member of the family.

One thing for sure,

your machine does not look like a 48 yr.old. Great contemporary style and looks like it's been well cared for. What condition is the brush roll in, because other than that, with the motor bearings replaced you're probably good for another 48!

You are right, it might be around in 48 years, but I sure won't be around. The machine is in good condition. It always had a tag on the handle (and still does today) :do not lift by the handle:. The Hoover dealer made a point of telling us when we I purchased it for my mother-DO NOT LIFT BY THE HANDLE. She took him seriously!
I found old records where it had the SAME problem back in 1995.
You would not believe the amount of dirt it will STILL remove from my heavy carpeting. The brushes look to be in very good condition and they are nice and soft so no worry of any damage to the carpet.
I have the dusting tools and used them every day. I was having a little issue with the hose staying connected to the cleaner.
Using the newer hepa bags, such an improvement in air flow and dust leakage too.
 
Good News: The now make Filtrete hepa filtration bottom fill Hoover type C bags. So you can get the wonderful filtration you desire, with the "Alice from Brady Bunch" Hoover.
 
The hood color has grown on me. What I do like is that the base is not the common off white and the power cord has a color instead of a generic white.
I can see these Convertibles looking good with the Tool set that was a little darker color instead of the white.
