Hello Guys,

I am new to the world of vacuum collecting and this is my first post ! I am so excited! Anyways, I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find a Hoover Constellation or if you maybe someone is selling one in pink that floats. I know that some of the first generations didn't float, and this is something that i have wanted to see in person for quite sometime.

If you can help a brotha out, much obliged. Again i am so excited to become a part of the gang !!!

Ryan

Hey there Ryan!

Just wanted to welcome you to the wonderful world of Vacuumland! Lots of nice people on here, sharing our love of the greatest home appliance we know - the vacuum cleaner. As you can see, we come from all over the world - from Canada to Australia, from Finland to the UK, from South Africa to the USA.... :-)

Welcome to the site. Rather than get a vintage one, I would just get a modern one. A lot easier to find, and just the same thing, although I think the newer one glides more easy. Anyway, I prefer Uprights to canisters, but the constellation is a nice one.

Wow!!!

I love how welcoming you guys are !!! It's great to have such a warm welcoming. I am not sure how much a newer one you guys would suggest. I would admit that i am one of those guys who prefers canisters to uprights. I have been to quite a few thrift stores and never found one. I didn't know if anyone would be willing to sell. I know how hard it must be to part something. My partner says i am weird for having such an affinity for the constellation. But, what other canisters would be a great first vacuum.

I am just starting out! hahahaha. I guess you would call me a later bloomer ?

anywho,
Ryan

no, ryan you are far from a late bloomer. this time last year i didn't think much of vacuums at all but a run of the mill appliance. a year later, i have 6 kirby's and 3 hoovers, nothing newer than 1985. i'm 27 and have only been into it a year. since the start i got into restoring and repairing my own vacs to as new condition best i can. thankfully old kirby's and hoovers are easy to repair, though having servicing manuals do come in handy if you don't know a collector who repairs his own machines to learn from. cosmetic restoration is a story for another thread. i also have a connie 86 from 1958. runs like a dream.

i would check craigslist, estate sales, as well as thrift stores and ebay for connies. i got my connie free from my friend Sean and he found it at a thrift store for $5 with everything. don't fret, and don't overpay. except for my kirby classic omega, i've never paid more than 45$ for any machine i have. average is 25 or less excluding shipping.

like your affinity with connies, i like vintage kirby's and hoovers. hoovers grew on me from this site and the old convertibles and other 50's - 70's era hoovers are great, i have 2 convertibles. however, the heritage II kirby is what got me into kirby's from my friend who had one. i liked how it looked and thats when it all went downhill after i found one of my own at a thrift store for 20 bucks.

you'll find different brands you didn't know much about before visiting here you'll start to like from seeing other's collections here, and take on a few (or like many of us here, more than you have room for) of your own. for the brands you already are familiar with, there are many experts here including myself who know about thier specific brands well and will share thier great knowledge in fixing them up, histories of brands, and how to find parts or what is "oddball" or rare about a brand and certain models.

you'll have a great time here, and just wait till you go to your first mini-meet! i'm going to my second in a few weeks. they're a blast.

Thanks!!!

Guys,
I honestly don't think that anyone in my town ever owned one. craiglist is a bust and so is the garage sales. I must say this is go to one in a million that i find one in my town. I also looked at ebay and they want way to much for the connies on there. The search will continue

Ryan :)

Sell ?

Ben,
I didn't know if you were willing to sell one or just showing what you had. The funny thing was. That my partner and i were talking and he doesn't think in all the years that he has been invlolved with vacuums has seen a hoover connie either. He has never seen any at thrift store, trash or estate sale. So i guess it's a big deal all the way around. We did however pick a Singer Simon yesterday and he was stoked to have one becuase yes they were junk but i guess they aren't as common ? thoughts ?

hoover connies

Hey Ryan, Keep checking Ebay under vintage Hoover vacuum cleaners. The pink one is very rare so it may take time until you find one. Try to settle on another color. There are two shades of blue on the #86 and #454. They are nice. Jeff

Thanks

Yeah I am really just trying to settle now. Thanks for letting me know the pink one is rare. I also want one in blue, you know to have a set one boy and one girl. is that wierd? Another one i have my eye is a Electrolux XXX and the GE roll easy. I know the Roll easy is extremely rare, but with luck i think i can find one. I am not really sure about how 'rare' the Electolux XXX is though.

You guys have been a tremendous help !!!!

Ryan

My advice for an Electrolux XXX is to keep checking out ebay. That is how I ended up getting mine with everything original, even the hose, and it had even been restored when I got it! I didn't have to do a thing other that plug it in. Heres a link to the video of mine.

Daniel :-)

What did you end up paying for your electrolux XXX with shipping everything ? I know that they obviously have different currency in Canada, but it sound really awesome and that's really cool that you got all the original attachments !!!!! major +++

Ryan, another great first canister vacuum would be a Compact or a Tristar. They are really simple in design but powerful and all around great vacuums. Lots of collectors have them in their collections. You might have an easier time finding one of them than a Constellation. The Tristar is just what the company changed its named to so the early models would be Compacts while the later models would be branded TriStars. They have been discussed a lot on this forum so just do a search and I'm sure you'll find plenty to read up about them. Good luck in your quest!

mo XXX

Above video should have original Elux salesmans song.A portion was "you step on the button and move your arm,away-away the dirt will go".

Ryan, I think I paid $70 total with shipping included. They actually shipped really fast as well... It only took about 3 days to get here. I think it was $45 for the machine, all of the original attachments, and hose, which I thought was pretty good since it had been restored and polished before I received it. It also came with the sprayer and vaporizer. The shipping was the rest of the cost which wasn't that bad for a rather heavy cleaner and all its accessories.
Keep looking, they show up quite often on there.

Daniel :-)

Success

I finally found of the hoover connie and the picture of it is already on here. Ben is graciously selling me his 86 connie and I couldn't be more excited!!!! I will eventually find the pink one. Anyone know the model # for it ?

Anyways I just wanted to tell ya'll how thrilled I am. I have also conteplated buying the pearl connie from 2008,but as a broke college student am not able to afford the 249 it is. Well a guy can dream!

Ryan

P.S. There is a video on youtube of a top port connie floating and I had been told the top ports didn't float. Link to video is below
