Hoover constellation 858 restoration question?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and hope somebody can help. I'm restoring a constellation 858 and working to restore the floating action, it's rather anemic even with the motor filter removed. I was looking online and noticed one in a video that had a thin real in between the bottom (motor housing half) and the top motor plate. The top plate fits snugly and if a seal goes there it would have to be thin so not to raise the top plate from the base resulting in a loose motor suspension in the rubber grommets. I've indicated the lactation of the possible missing seal in the photo between the arrows. If a seal goes there it could explain the weakness in the floating action due to an air leak. The tolerance is so tight that I question if a seal could fit but one in the video left me wondering. Can you help?

the rubber bumper is the gasket. put some silicone spray on the bottom of the bumper that rests on the bottom half of the canister. should seal it back up

Thanks for getting back to me Bnsd60m9200. I believe the formed top motor plate that rest on top on the bottom half comes into contact with the bumper/seal but I'm asking about in between the top plate and bottom half. See picture...any thoughts? Thanks

kmarkg, there's no seal between those pieces on mine. Depending on what type of flooring you have it hovering on, there may not be as noticeable of a floating.

cole is right. ive taken apart many connies. its bare metal there. and if you have medium pile berber carpet it simply wont float well. shag or high pile carpet? forget it.

Thanks guys I really appreciate the feedback, I'm trying to float on a concrete floor in my basement so there's something apparently causing the motor to be underpowered if it's not a seal issue. Can you still buy carbon brushes for these constellations?

i have

had this problem the air was escaping around the skirt at the bottom i sealed it with bathroom sealant and it floats perfectly now even on thick carpet
