Last week I was given a Hoover Concept One Power Drive. The serial number tells me it was made in 1991 and it is in very good condition, especially for being plastic.
However, it needs new belts and the brushroll looks like it needs replacement. The bristles have a tapered end as if they are worn down. Belts are really not a problem but the brushroll is. Hoover lists a replacement at $45.00 but I seem to remember the brushes are replaceable. If so, where can I get them and is it hard to do the replacement?

Hoover no longer makes the brush roll or the brushes. The patent has not expired so there is no generic. I've seen brush rolls on eBay for $80, but even the vacuum is not worth that money. I have a Concept 1 with good brushes that I could sell to you.

It's really sad that such a nice vacuum is no longer remembered by the company that made it.

That's because the company that made it no longer exists. Does anybody know when the patent will expire? I'm hopeful Cleveland Wood Products does come up with a generic brushroll when it does. I know the Celebrity uses the same one. Perhaps they will even manufacture a generic Dial-A-Matic brushroll?

The early Celebrity powerheads and Power-Drive DAM's are the same agitator, and the later Celebrity-quadraflex powermatic (without the brushed edge cleaning) and the Concept are the same (Canisters used green brushes, Concepts used orange).

Later Elite-style power drive cleaners (pre SP Windtunnel) can also be used in any of the cleaners I just listed, but the earlier concepts will need a different bottom-plate and the SP DAM or Celebrities need one of the brush-roll endcaps swapped out in order to work.

And yes, brush strips for the Concept 1 and Quadraflex Powernozzles are all discontinued. That's a more recent thing; I'm sure brush strips are still out there, it's just going to be a matter of finding them.. Even if you can't find replacement brush strips per-se, there are plenty of junker machines that are out there willing to be parts donors.

update

I replaced both the brush roll belt and drive belt as well as both lights and I can't believe the difference! This is really a very good vacuum! Most of the jerky motion in the drive is gone and it really seems to pick up from the carpet. Nice grooming, too. But, I could only get one of the lights to work. Talk about a bear to remove and replace! I don't know if I have the bulb in correctly, the filiment in the bulb broke in my efforts to insert or if the fixture is non working. After nearly an hour of fiddling with this, and contimplating the use of a hammer!, I decided to leave well enough alone. I was fascinated by how difficult the bulb changing is in this machine. You would think Hoover would have made it much simpler or made the sockets to pop out to insert/remove the bulb. These must have been a vac shop's best friend in their day.
