HOOVER CONCEPT ONE BELT SLIPPING

Hey guys, has anyone that owns a concept one had any issues white the larger belt moving over to the smaller power drive belt? i've had this happen twice.. while im using it I can smell the heated rubber.. and so when i flip it over to check the belt, the larger agitator belt has moved over on top of the smaller belt.. i moved it back and about 10 mins later same thing... any reason why this happens? do i need a new belt? The belt in question is new.

While I do own a Concept One with Power Drive, I have never experienced a problem with the agitator belt slipping over to make contact with the Power Drive belt. What I suggest is to remove the offending belt, make sure there is no hair, thread, fragments of rubber from previous belts, or any other litter covering the agitator pulley or the motor's driveshaft, and then try another belt to see if this corrects the problem.

Additionally, are you using a genuine Hoover belt? With other off-brand belts, there can be defects in their construction which may lead to premature stretching and slipping of the belt. I recommend using genuine Hoover agitator belts, Type 30, part number 38528-008. They are of the best quality and last longer than other belts.

Improper or faulty belt could be the problem. Just because it's new doesn't mean that it's not the problem. It is the easiest thing to check, so start with this idea.

What you've got with this rig (and other self-propelled Hoover uprights) are two turning shafts that must be perfectly parallel for the belt to remain centered. There are several issues that can cause these to go out of alignment, such as the motor mounts collapsing on the later Windtunnels. However, on the Concept a more likely cause is that the drive machanism has come loose from the agitator housing brackets. The drive is only hung in there by several machine screws through the sheet metal brackets. I've seen this get loose which will cause misalignment problems.

Back to belts, not even contemporary Hoover replacements are necessarily to be trusted. I've had problems with 035 belts on S/P Windtunnels. They are too tight when first installed; so much so that you almost cannot get them on. Then when installed, they collapse the motor mounts from over-tension enough that they throw the belt off (to the outside). I won't use them any longer; I use Durabelt brand which are sized more like the original. All belts when new are tight and they stretch out fairly quickly to their operating size, but the current 035 belts are too tight and sometimes won't allow themselves to run long enough in place to stretch.

We have been told over and over again down through the years to use the proper belt because only it has the proper tension, etc. However, when the "proper" belt made by the original manufacturer isn't right, you know the world is going to Hell in a handbasket.

The belts have to be on the pulley a certain way for it to work correctly. Here is a thread from the archives that talks about the proper alignment.

Who knew? I never paid any attention to see which direction the drive belt is facing.

Another question guys.. Do you all vacuum with the concept in hi speed or low speed?
Is there a proper way?

I use it in low speed unless there is a tough bit of dog hair on the carpet

If it is a 2 speed non-power surge Concept One, I use high speed for carpets/rugs and above floor attachment use. I use low speed for hard floors.
If it is a 2 speed power surge Concept One, I use normal speed for carpets/rugs/hard floors and above floor attachment use. I don't use the power surge speed.

The 2 speed non-power surge Concept Ones are 5.6 amps.
The 2 speed power surge Concept Ones are 7.2 amps.

what I've seen with hoovers is the housing where the nub on the brushroll end sits in wears out/reams out of shape. This causes the brush to get slightly pulled back and hence putting the brushroll on an angle and causing the belt to move to the inside (towards the power drive belt). I have seen this happen mainly on elites, but it didn't get bad enough to constitute finding a replacement base or make a fix, and I've seen it start to happen on concepts. Your situation would make it be the opposite end that is wearing out, which I don't ever recall seeing, but it can be a possibility. take the belt off and put the brush in place and put the cover back on and try moving the brush back and forth and see how much movement you get. Or inspect the slot in the housing for the brushroll end on the suction side.

Concept belts moving?

The Belts are moving towards each other because the transmission is out of adjustment. The transmission needs to be tilted one way or another,

well

i've found out that it doesn't happen when i have the machine running on normal low speed... its when its been running on HI that it slips.
